Engine swap

Can someone tell me what it is about "Lincoln" 460 motors that makes them unusable in trucks? Is it related to mounts or ???

I have a '77 F150 with 351M/C-6.

Also, are 429 motors from cars (don't know they were ever in trucks) candidates? I know of a '71 Marquis that has a 429 available.

Thanks as always,

Rob.

you will need manifolds or headers and an oil pan for a truck. the car motors are front sump while the trucks are rear. other than that, i think theyre the same.

Thanks Highboy, that sounds so simple though I wonder why all the fuss. I don't mind buying an oil pan! If I were switching to a 429/460 then I'd be getting new headers anyway. As I understand it, both those engines should bolt to my C-6.

Here's another one .. can my C-6 be changed to bolt to a 302/351W? I guess that means changing the bellhousing?

Who told you they can be used ?

I have a 429 from a 70 Torino in my truck.

429/460 engine mount castings are the same.

Why are they wanted ?
Because they cam stock with 320 & 360 HP from the factory.

Please visit the 385 engine series forum for 429/460 topics.

The mid to late 1970's Lincoln 460's were a de-tuned smogged up mess. No 429's were ever installed in F100/350's, but if you want to install a 429 in a truck, there's no problemo, as the mounts for a 460 will work perfectly.

429's were used in cars: 1968/1973.

Hi Dennis, thanks for the reply. LMC has mounts to do the conversion but they say "does not work on Lincoln motors". I am sure I read that elsewhere too. Always wanted to know the reason! Maybe they actually mean the really old Lincoln-Mercury engines (462 etc)?? Guess I would have to ask them.

462's are boat anchors, and are the latest and last version of the M-E-L 383's and 430's.

M-E-L = Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division.

lmc is NOT an FTE sponsor, so shop at your own risk.

These motor mounts from a 1978 4x2 truck with 460 are the ones I used on my 78 Truck 4x2 with 1970 429.

That is how my 76 f150 2wd 460 are set exactly. I never though it was a factory 460 truck tho. I'll have to recheck that.

when you change the oil pan make sure you change the oil pump and pickup too.
