I have a 73 F-100 and I am have trouble getting the turnsignal switch plug apart. It has a couple red (buttons?) on one side but they dont compress and dont release the plug. Can anyone help?
THey were designed and authorized by Mr. Satan himself. CURSES!!!
They are a huge pain (or were on mine) and you just have to have a very small flat blade screwdriver to help you. The small screwdriver also comes in handy for the blood sacrafice you will ultimately make when it slips and jams into at least one finger. Good luck.
The red plastic thing doesn't do anything until you get the connector apart. If there are no ears/tabs on the connector it should just pull apart. Gently prying with a screwdriver is a good idea.
Once you get the connector apart, you need to write down the color code and order of the wires in the connecor. Then pull the red plastic thing out and you can remove the wires from the connector. Once free of the connector, you can pull the wires out of the column. It would be a good idea to pull a string up the column with the old wires to help pull the new wires back down.
On the serious side, when I did mine, I actually cut off about 2 inches of the old wires above the plug (since I didn't need the old wired anyways) and then pulled each wire out of the plug as I put in each new wire. That way you cannot screw up.
One other thing, use the pull string as suggested. I had to use a really long one and pull no more than two at a time. Auto trans on the column and a really tight fit makes it almost impossible otherwise.
If the string is at least 2x the column length and you put a slip knot in the middle of the string, it works pretty well. You can then pull the wires down one or two at a time, but have enough string hanging out the top to pull the knot back up.
