We got this truck at a company auction and it ran great for my dad for the frist 2 years, fuel prices got up and we let it sit. I finally made a deal with him to get it but it wont start when the eniges cold even if its 90 degrees out. I have replaced the fuel filter, GPR, new starter. Its getting some fuel to the injectors but Im not sure its getting enough, because it will crank and crank and show no signs of starting except for some smoke coming out of the back of the turbo. But if you spary a shot of starting fuild to it and i mean barley enough to smell the fuild into the air filter it will start with no problem. (and no its not addicted to the either, haha i have only started it that way once or twice) also when you go to coast start it it starts with no problem. Im about to my wits end with it I dont know much about deisels but i tell ya im learning quick with this truck. Any sugestions???
Somebody told me that there is two parts to the relay the top and bottom i replaced the top part and then took it off when it didnt work and took it to get check were they said it worked good, and im 98% positive that it is wired rite because i have the manuel for the truck that i wired it back up from. The only problem that i have really noticed now that i think about it is that it used to click or tick after the wait to start light went out now it doesnt. Is it sopose to? and the oil is a little low i havent bothered changed it for a while because its been basicly farm bound and hasnt moved more then a couple of miles in the last couple years.
mine ticks every time when the WTS light comes on. make sure the GPR is correct and test the glowplugs. there could be a few bad since it started after you plugged it in.
i just talked a guy i know that says that on the early 90's fords had a censor on the oil so if it was low it would give spark would that be the same on a deisel?
Well I would have assumed the same thing..........the GP's should matter during the summer, BUT it is weird that plugging it in helped it to start, umm?
I have my GP relay unhooked and my truck starts up the same as before I unhooked it.............its summer time in Texas.........couldn't tell any difference
I vote its something else besides GP's......not sure what exactly, maybe something about the warm, thinner oil being pumped to the injectors after being plugged up, etc???
I know there is a way to test the resistance the glow plugs which would give you a difinitive amswer to the GP question. Not sure what it was but I know Ive read about it here on this forum. Hopefully someone else will pipe in with it, or maybe do a search.
