Brought my first dually home yesterday. The ride was a little bumby. Ford says 75 PSI for rear - I assume that's with a load. Don't know what's in the tires now as I don't have a long air gage. Any suggestions for an empty ride? Used to use 55 PSI when empty in the single and 80 when towing.
I have a dually and run 55 psi front all the time. The rears are at 35 empty and 45 to 55 depending how heavily loaded. I have 235/85/16 Michelin tires on mine and have around 70000 miles on them. There are some charts on a few tire websites that match weight/tire size/air pressure. I think the air pressure recommendations on the sticker from Ford are for max weight.
I run 35 in my rear duals when unloaded and it makes a big difference in ride. Even 35 is too much pressure going by the wear on the rear tires (they are seriously worn in the center), but it's the lowest pressure on the tire inflation chart.
Yes, the pressure that's listed on the door jamb is for a truck that's loaded to it's max axle rating. I've weighed my truck empty and with my truck camper loaded and set the tire pressures accordingly for best traction, wear and ride quality.
