Ok,, 7.3 diesel. Just drove 3000 miles at highway speeds. Short 100 mile trip pulling 6000#'s+ load. Rotolla 10w40. Used 1qt in 3000 miles with 135000 miles on engine. Just wondering what is considered normal? I think 3000 miles/qt at 70+ speeds is ok but my son's 6.0 diesel doesn't use any apparently in the same distance. Any input thanks Jim
How many miles on the 6.0? My 7.3 just started using a little at 200,000, about a gallon in 6000 miles. I just change it then and do not add any. I am not at all concerned about that. My Cat 3208 in my motor home will use a gallon in 2000 miles and it only has about 45,000 on it. That does concern me a little.
I just returned from a 4000 mile trip and used 3 quarts. Very hard running in very hot weather with AC on 2400 rpm at 68 mph because of 4.88 rear axle with 24,000 lb total vehicle weight.
Most of the time it would be doing 14-18 psi and 900 degrees pre-turbo on flat ground. The slightest grade would bring 20 psi and 1000 degrees.
Ford considers 1qt/900 miles the point at which they treat it as excessive.
Your usage doesn't sound excessive, but how old is your air filter? if you have not done the CCV mod a dirty air filter can cause a little oil consumption through the CCV vent in the intake.
I should have said that I expected to use some oil. What I did end up using is no surprise to me as the CCV always vents some grey mist and that has to be generated from somthing. That spinning crankshaft will most definately break up the oil and produce some mist to be vented.
All engines use some oil and if they don't, expect to have some prematurely worn valve guides due to complete lack of lubrication, etc.
Have you considered trying a 15-40 oil? The diesel will sometimes burn off the light oils in you motor oil and that could explain your usage. The most I've burned between oil changes is 1/2 quart and that's only pulling loads around 15,000 pounds. I've got 222,000 on the odometer now.

I was using Mobil 1 Delvac 5-40, but dropped it after hearing something that the engineers preferred that dino based oil be used with HEUI injectors and just change it every 5000 miles or so.
I never add oil between changes, at least so far anyway, knock on my head. Of course I never really go anywhere either and tow a boat occasionaly LOL. I think my oil simply ages rather than racks up the mileage. I hate that. At this rate I will hit 100k in the year 2030.

The 6.0 has about 60,000 miles. Based up on previous post it would appear that 1 qt usage at 3000 isn't bad. This was also at highway speeds and temps over 90F. Thanks for the info. BTW,, the oil is Rotella 15w40 for this 1qt in 3000 miles. Jim

I added a quart and it was fine for a while then it went back down, but if I didn't add one back, it remained there for the rest of the oil chance cycle. I had heard that sometimes they "find a level" where they level out. Not sure if this is true or not, but I kinda thought this was strange. When it drops about half to one quart low on the dipstick, I leave it alone...unless I am heading back out on the road.. Just my opinion.
I've been using diesels for personel use for about 30 years and have always dealt in gallons. A qt. sure is not worth worrying about in my humble opinion. My Cat holds 7 gallons and is a real pain to add in a pusher motor home. If I started worrying about qts. I would probably quit driving it.

Yeah, mine does the same thing. I seem to always have to put some in if it is 1-2 qts low, but for some reason once it gets just down right at the "add" mark, it stabilizes and does not go below that. I am actually conducting a little "test" right now, as I am wondering if the stock CCV mod actually acts as a venturi, drawing the oily mist out, as I am sure most of the oil used goes through the CCV, as I have no leaks. I changed oil, and re-routed the CCV at the same time, and am going to document per mileage what I find and see if it makes a difference.
Surprise, when I thought I had driven 3000 miles/qt on oil,, the wife misread the records. I have actually driven about 4000 miles on 1 pint not 1 quart. So that in my book is miniscule. Given I have 133,000 miles on the truck. Many more trucking miles left. Jim
question, those rotella 1 gallon containers at wal-mart, those are equal to 4 quarts right? not 3? on the side of the container, it only raeds to 3 quarts on it. i dont see a 4th mark?
