I have a 92 F150 4x4 and I have a problem with the front tires wearing on the inside. so i figured i needed an alingment. The shop told me that i needed new ball joints and tie rod ends. They didnt even put the thing on a lift or jack it up or anything(so needless to say i wont be going back.) I brought it home and did some looking around myself. I have known for a while that i need new lockout hubs for the front. When i move the tire in any direction i can see some slight play in the hub/ brake rotor area. Could bad hubs cause a toe out condition? I have already done the pry bar under the tire check and i do not see any movement at all in the ball joints and the tie rods seem pretty snug. I have also been told that it could be worn out springs (spring sag.) I do have the dual shock set up on the front and there is 201000 miles on the truck with automatic hubs if this helps. Thank you.
More than once I have had alinement's and tire still leaned in at top. Springs take care of it.
Weak coils will ad to wear . And with those miles probably are bad. You should very have little play in rotor bearing area . Take apart and repack. Tighten till can't spin rotor and back off till spin freely.Take for ride the hub will feel warm but not hot hot if adjusted right then at 2nd oil change I check again .
But take it to other shop . They will check out (you will have to pay for their time ) If you want to do self.
Every truck I get I replace coil spring $55-90 depending on what kind you get ( I put F350 2x4 coil ) Because I haul . The tie rods if have any movement. (They are cheap)
Check ball joints and repack replace bearings. (I do the brake replace to lube all areas)
I live in pot hole country and 2 alinement's a year are common ( 20000 mile years) Any thing to help my tire wear longer.
if you have over 200k your ball joints probably do need to be done. my '91 had 86,000 on it and the ball joints were SHOT. i still had camber issues and had to get camber adjustment bushings for the upper ball joints.
I agree, do the ends and replace the springs while you are doing the work check the TTB pivot bushings and radius arm bushings if you did not already. I have to do the same with my 96 Bronco.
