when to change suspension?

hey all, my suspension is getting rather hard on bumps and squeaks quite a bit, if and when should i look into changing shocks/struts? im guessing there are better options than stock replacements, if so what are they? i have a 2004 f150 with a pro comp level kit and have 55k miles. thanks.

Wondering the same myself with same year and similar miles. Thinking Bilsteins all the way around. Just don't know if I want to keep the leveling kit or go with 2" adjustable Bilsteins in the front.

I am also in your situation. Do I need to replace the shocks + struts + springs? How do I know when to replace what?

Thanks for any help.

I just had all my shocks and strutts replaced at 57,000. The driveside front strutt was completely shot along with both rear shocks. I had the pro-comp leveling kit but I took this opportunity to put the Rancho Quick Lift strutts in the front and had my leveling kit removed. The Quick Lift can be set to level your truck from 0" to 2.5". I went with the Rancho RS9000XL Adjustable shocks in the rear. The Quick Lift strutt is also adjustable like the 9000XL shocks so they went together pretty nicely. The ride is incredible as good or better then the day I drove it off the lot.

By the way anyone looking for a leveling kit I have a 2.5" Pro Comp kit for sale if anyone is interested. It was on my truck for about 8 months so it is pretty much new. PM me if interested.

With an '04, it's fairly safe to assume your original shocks have degraded significantly (if you still have the OE's). Unless the springs are sagging, they shouldn't need replacement.

If you can manually bounce any corner of the vehicle, and it does much more than just return to the neutral position and stop bouncing, you can bet that shock is almost gone and isn't controlling the suspension like a fresh one would.

Any oil leak from a shock is a sure sign it needs replacement too.
