Good idea or not?

In my travels today I discovered an 84 F150 with the 300-6 motor in it. It's only got 98K on the Odometer and the owner says it's never turned over. Didn't get much details on it. From what I seen the body is straight. I'd take a closer inspection before I bought it. He said the truck hadn't been driven in 6 years. He says he does start it every once in a while. It would need a battery and some tinkering. I'm thinking with the way the prices are sky rocketing on them early and even late 70's pickups it's only a matter of time before the 80-86 Fords get their turn. Now would be a good time to jump on the band wagon before they get too high. I know the guy half way well and I'm betting that a couple hundred would pry it from his hands. It's an 84 so it predates EFI. So any repairs needed would be alot easier and/or cheaper.

So good idea or not?

For a couple of hundred bucks then why not? The 300 straight 6 was an awesome emgine. If the body is in pretty good condition then I'd take it.

I'd take a shot at it. Sounds like it could be had fairly inexpensively, and the 300 Six is a pretty near bulletproof engine. Makes good power (within its limits, of course), and has decent mpg for a truck. My vote says to go for it.

I got a free Bronco with the I6 and 4spd - the PO wanted 200.00 - but he told me I could take it. It had to be towed, but this pre EFI horse is the project truck I have always wanted - Does anyone have a solid Dana 44 that I can have?

Oh, take the truck!

84=Electronic carb, real pain to deal with. Uses a computer, O2s, computer controlled timing, and fuel metering solenoids. Fun.

I'm pretty sure you are right that it was 85 when they switched to the electric carbs. I used to have an 84 F150 with a 300 I-6, and it just had a regular 1bbl carb with no electronic, computer junk on it. I'd say that this truck would be a good buy, especially if the body is good. Here in the midwest, it's impossible to find an 80s truck with a decent body.

It started in 83, by 85 they all had it. Then in 87 came EFI.

The 300 I-6 was the king of 6's and inproved any plateform it was places in. It reached peak torque under 2,000 rpm's and is an awesome offroad moror or stump puller. I was blessed to have a few of them in my life time. My favorite was a 77 F-150 4x4, 300 -6 and 4 speed, that truck was awesome. It went through hell and back and never complained and it wasn't to bad on gas. The last one I had was a 96 4x4 5 speed eddie b edition, it was to pretty to get dirty, but a great truck all the same. I would buy it for the engine if nothing else. The 300 I-6 was one of fords better idea's of all time. The 300 was replaced but it's never been really replaced if you know what I mean.

Yeah I know all about them 300-6s Between it and the 350 GM were the best light truck motors ever made. That's what got me thinking about buying it. I'll ask him how interested he is in selling next time I see him. I'm pretty sure he'd part with it if the money was right. That of course remains to been determinded.

When the PO of the Fullsize Bronco I now have asked me if I would like to take a look at the Bronco, I took him up on the offer. As soon as I found out it had a 300 and 4spd I knew I had to bring it home. My first truck was a 77 100 with a 300 and 3 on the tree. The truck would keep running and was a breeze to work on.
Pick up the old ride, I am sure you will have "fun" working on it.
