I want to know if the 3.0 and 4.0L V-6's have the same bolt pattern and/or what will I have to change out to make it work. I have a '94 reg cab 2wd ranger with auto. ANy help would be great.
No they do not, the 3.0 and 4.0 are from 2 different engine family's. You would need a tranny, drive shaft, motor mounts, computer and harness, those are just off the top of my head. It's easier to swap in a 5.0 as they make kits to do it. Unless you have a complete donor truck, it would be easier to sell the 3.0 truck and buy a 4.0 powered ranger. Welcome to the forum, were glad to have you. Whats your reasoning behind the swap, you have a 4.0, want more power, doing a project build, or other reasons?
I have a chance to buy a 4.0 with only 15,000 miles on it out of a total lossed '01 that is still in good shape, an older gentalman owned it so I know it hasn't been hurt. buit if it is that much trouble I may just go for the 302 once the 3.0 in it starts going. Right now it has 169,000 on the clock and still gets just shy of 600 miles interstate on one tank of gas. At $3 a gallon I cant complain. Thank you for the info I have been wondering about it.
"O MAN", that would be tempting, not only is it a 4.0, in 01 they went to the sohc 4.0, 207 hp with 238 foot pounds, thats about as good as a 5.0 with less weight. I love my 4.0 sohc, I added a few mods and that thing screams. If you could get the whole truck and set them side by side where you could have access to everything you would need. For a 4.0 cammer motor it might be worth the trouble, as you can tell, I love those cammers. I'm sure it will be easier just to do the 5.0 swap, "BUT IT'S A 4.0 CAMMER"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunatly 4.0 have different bolt pattern. U have to swap it with tranny ore bellhousing.
The bell housing is integral to the trans on most of these units. But, if you can pick up the whole unit, you can swap the trans also, and that would be nice - and a lot easier than a V8 swap.
