i am looking to change my exhaust.. I am getting a flowmaser 40, and am not sure whether or not to change the pipe size from 2" to 2.25', or to 2.5".. Or keep it at 2". I dont want it to sound ricey or too loud, and I don't want to lose much performance... Its on a 94 ranger with the V6 4.0. I have asked before but I never got any answers about how the pipe size changes.. thanks guys (and gals).
Jeremy
when I had mine built guy said you should go no more than 25% bigger in size. So I have a full 2" system from the Y pipe back. I had a new free flow cat and magna flo muffler install in the process. A little loud till burn in but now nice and mellow, does not drone while on the highway.
At the Y pipe he had to build the connector as it is a oval shape thing for both pipes to join at. He kepts the bend at a minimum and the pipes as straight as possible to minimize back pressure. I also have free flow intake to go along with it.
No bigger than 2.5, my gibson is 2.5 in with 2 pipes exciting at 1.75 each and thats about right. If it only had one pipe out, it would be 2.5. Any bigger than that and you will loose lowend. You can get away with 2.5 on a 4.0. The things that control the sound is the muffler it's self and the tips, the flowmaster 40 series is one of the loudest after market mufflers you can buy, thats not a problem. I would do 2.5 in and out with 3" tip. I have heard that the 40 series hurts power in any event, but others on here say no. I use gibson and have it set up super truck or lighting style and it performs well with a nice deep rumble. I can speak for gibson as I have had many gibson catbacks, but I can't speak for the others, however the pipe sizes should be correct, at least it is on a gibson, "good luck".
istill cant decide what size, lol... still not sure whether to go with the 50 delta series or the 40.. I dont want too loud, but I want LOUDER than stock..Right now all the noise is in the engine not the exhaust.... I am going to search online for sound clips
