56 4x4?

I am looking to buy an un-restored 56 and am told that the one I am looking at is an origonal 4X4 with a 292 V8 and a 3 speed on the collum.----does that sound right? (an origonal FACTORY 4X4? with 292?
PS---the owner is asking 2k for it.

thanx---BILL

Ford did not make 4x4 trucks in the factory until later in the 50's, not sure it might have been' 58 or '59. A '56 ordered with 4x4 would have been shipped out to an outfit like Marmon-Herrington. Napco did some Fords but M-H was the major company that put 4 wheel drives under Fords from pickups up to big F-600 and F-700's.

First of all, welcome. Glad to have you here.

If it's a Marmon-Herrington of that era it's a rarity. There should be badges on the inside of the cab that identify it as such, and on the hood. In addition there were conversions done by Napco, Fabco and by Coleman that should also have been badged. Commonly badges get removed, but you can see where they were mounted. If you don't see any evidence of it having had such badges, I'd start looking to see if it's instead an old body with new drive train pieces.

well it is possible that it has a M-H conversion but i didnt think the 292 come out till around 57 or 58. its probaly more likely its a 56 body sitting on a 59-64 frame.

2K is a good price if it runs and drives. Even though 4x4 and 292 was not an available option in 1956. What is the model? F100 etc? What is the wheel base. There will be a metal plate inside the drivers door with the original info on model, wheel base, engine, horse power.

Another question I'd have is whether the motor is really a 292, or simply an earlier Y block as would have been correct for the truck. Did the early 239s and 272s look any different than the later 292s?

From what I remember of the Y-Blocks they all look the same.
