I just got an 07 6.0 a few weeks ago and I already have 1400 miles on it, so I want to change the oil soon. Here is my question/dilema.
-I absolutely do not want to jeopardize my warranty at all. I also would like to save some money and not have the dealer do the service because an oil change is $170. I will be doing it or my buddy who is a mechanic at a small shop in town will do it.
-How do you guys that do your maintanence yourself still keep your warranty intact.
I keep the receipts too. I take the top off the filter box and jot the milage and date on it then i take that into the house and load it on my spreadsheet I built for maintenance.
the dealership is basically a bunch of scum bags. Where can I buy Mororcraft oil at a descent price and what weight for warm weather 15w-40? or is it 10-40, I can't remember what everyone is running
5 quart jugs of 15W40 Motorcraft oil at Advance Auto Parts for $10.
Pep Boys or Schucks has the Fram oil filters on sale 2 for $7 about once a month. Stock up on them if you can.
It's hard to beat $33.50 for an oil change in our trucks. (My dealer charged me $18 in hazardous waste disposal a couple of weeks ago when I had them do a "free" oil change)
Even my dealer doesn't charge me that much for a simple oil change. If you get it done at a shop and show receipts I don't think they will hollar as much as if you do it yourself, although, if your dealership is charging 170 for oil change then they probably would hollar no matter what. Find a different service department if there is one close by. Beerstalker, when I had my free oil change, it was totally free, no disposal fee for the one here.
Yeah it kind of made me mad, but then I realized $18 for an oil change isn't bad so I got over it. From now on I'll be doing my own though.
My dealer seems to be pretty cool when it comes to mods, but they seem to try to nickle and dime you to death when they do work for you. They charged me $160 on to remove the exhaust manifold and drill/tap it, install the EGT probe, and put the manifold back on the truck. Talked to some other guys here and they said it shouldn't have taken more than an hour, so it shouldn't have been that much. But I got the EGT probe for free (beta testing the MSD Dashhawk), so I wasn't really going to worry to much about paying $160 to install it.
yea that wasn't too bad since your a beta tester, i try to work with the dealership, that way if something does happen under warranty(which after almost 2 yrs(this september) I only have 15k left, so i'm sure it will expire before 2 yrs is up) they see how much they already got from me, that maybe I won't have to try to do some fancy talking, it could go wrong, but I try to do every little bit to keep it at bay though.
I am surprised your dealer did not include your first oil change for free on a new vehicle.... Mine did. That and I negotiated the second one for free as well - no $18 fee either.
yea they don't include anything and I was negotiating for some stuff too. This dealer just flat out lies about stuff, I really want to have as little contact with them as possible.
I really wish I could know for sure that my warranty would be honored if I did the maintanence myself. I would rerally like to save $100 on every service but if I don't know for sure that the warranty will be honored then I will have to just get raped with every service.
hazardous waste disposal !! Used oil is not classified as hazardous waste unless its contaminated with fuel. The dealer is just making money on this. It is a Recyclable product. A lot of vendors will pay to pick up the used oil or take it for free. While I was in the Airforce we made some money selling used jet engine oil. Just info from the old sarg.
