Took the Sea Doos to the lake today with old faithful.....'01 Crew Cab, V10, auto, 70,000 miles........110* in town, probably 115* at the lake.
Aprox 45 mile drive home everything running cool and normal.
Last few stops before home a puff of smoke and an oil smell from the front passenger side from underneath...ONLY during a stop!!! Acceleration normal, presures and temps normal. (I know the oil pressure guage is a faux gauge)
Had a dealer drain and flush trans a few thousand ago, was thinking maybe a line was dripping...but it doesn't smell like trans fluid.
I'll check oil cooler lines/oil levels when things cool off.
well jack!
on the right side you have the cooler lines, pan gasket and valve cover the could leak. you say on a stop you smell it so my guess is look at the cooler lines first as they would pump fuild out and unto the pipes the most. then look at the oil pans and v.cs
If it smelled like transmission fluid, I would have guessed that the shop over-filled it and fluid was coming from there. But you said it does not smell like trans fluid.
Checked all fluids; oil is full @ 1500 miles into this change and very clean.Trans fluid actually was at the high end of the hatch marks while motor was running.
Crawled under and did a visual.....found red drips at the very bottom of the bell housing where there is a round black plastic(?) plug/insert.
Looks like the drips could very well have hit the cross over pipe of the exhaust.
I'm thinking now that trans fluid on an exhaust pipe is a different smell than burnt clutches/trans fluid.
Theory is even though the trans fluid flush was 1,000+ miles ago, this was the first time the truck was actually "working"......2,000# trailer in 115*+ heat.....hoping it was just a litlle venting action going on. (actually NoMo's theory ).......the puffs exiting from what appeared to be one side could very well have been the direction of the wind.
Just did a 30 mile drive with no load, temp is 107*.....no smoke, will crawl under looking for drips later.
Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed!!

Sounds to me like the tranny got hot and was overfull to boot. Pulling the load was working it and pushed some over full luid out. Keep an eye on the ground after you drive it and see if you see anymore drops.
You might consider draining a little fluid out of the transmission to get the level a little lower without the smoke. Then I'd pack up and find someplace to live that wasn't so damn hot!
if it's comeing out from that plug it's a pump seal going bad .first make sure you pull a little fluid out to between the makes hot and in N. if you still get it have the pump seal area checked. mileage/heat . over heated fluid/ could also be time telling you that 4r100? is starting to go south and has a pump convertor bushing allowing the convertor to float around a little bit and leak.

Great.....this trans only has less than 30K on it, first one went 40K.
May be getting that Tundra sooner than I thought......

Chas, just thinking out loud, what's a good guy price on a bulletproof 4100R trans shipped to Vegas???.............Do I need a convertor???

If it didn't smell like tranny fluid and you don't see engine oil on the frame and such - take a look at the wheel bearings. They can sling some grease in that kinda heat if they're going south....so to speak.

Ford is on it as we speak......should know in the AM what'll they'll pay for.
here is hoping that it is not the pump. I had to replace the damn Tranny in my 99. I was pulling a 7K trailer uphill in seattle and high centered the trailer on a rock pulling out of a parking lot. It cost me 2500 "good buddy discount" because my wife works for a Nissan dealership. This included the labor to remove and install, new billit converter, heavy service bearing pack and shift kit. Basically a bulletproof rebuild. with 125K on my truck it was worth the money.

Ford is paying $750. If it's ONLY the seal, repair is supposed to be under $1,000.
