I have decided to replace the heads on my 460. It has stock heads now and I will probably just go back with stock. I have a 1986 f-350 that I use to haul my camper, trailer, boat, kids ect. I don't need 500 horse power but want some good reliable power. Anyone have suggestions where to get some heads. Mine are not repairable. I looked all over my heads for some casting numbers and all I found was the number 34 on them right under the #1 spark plug and again under the valve cover by the #2 exhaust valve spring. Maybe someone could give some advise on a head to go back with. thanks Scott.
Scott: I had the same difficulty finding the numbers on an '86 motor from an F-250 I put into my '66 F-100.
The numbers are on the underside. They are on the lip of the intake side of the head, where it juts out over the engine's center valley.
You'll need to pull the intake to look at them; use a mirror to to read the numbers (they will be upside down, if I remember correctly).
Most likely, you will have E5 or E6 heads; mine were E6.
I have been told they are not substantionally different from the D3 heads used on 460s since 1973. In fact, I was going to use D3 heads, when I got a set of remanufactured E6s shipped in cheaper than having the D3s redone locally.
