I was wondering if you guys would recommend against making your own intake gaskets. I am no stranger to making my own gaskets, but I always make my own carb gaskets and such, never anything with super heated water going through them. Any thoughts?
I think it would be pretty tough to make good intake gaskets. The store bought ones usually have that raised rubbery bead and are thick material. I suppose you could get good gasket paper of the right thickness and apply your own silicone beads on it, but it would still be a real pain cutting out all those oblong bolt holes and contours. Also there is a sliding motion as the manifold is pulled down which makes this gasket's job even more difficult.
I occasionally still make gaskets for water pumps carbs etc. with proper gasket paper and these work well. I prefer to buy them though as usually they're cheap and save a lot of labor.
I agree. There is no reason to make intake gaskets because they are easily available. It's tricky enough just to install intake gaskets, I'm sure it's even tougher to make them. Plus, a vacuum leak caused by an intake manifold gasket is really hard to spot. I've made my own EGR spacer plate gaskets before, I thought it was tough work; I can't imagine trying to make an intake gasket.
Well, I have these plates that are a perfect template for the intake gasket is why I would even consider it. See my intake has been milled to fit a 9.2 deck height, and I have a 351, so I have to use these plates to get it to fit properly. And because of this, I need 4 intake gaskets, it would only be like 20 bucks still, but if I can save 20 bucks...lol. the plates have a rubber gasket already on them on one side, so I was gonna double up on the otherside to compensate for it. Essentially using 6 gaskets, but the guy I got it from said he only used 2 sets.
At the old car swap meets I always keep an eye out for cheap full and also opened gasket sets for the engines I have and buy them up. But before you spend lots of time digging find out the price!
Ah, gotcha guys, thanks alot, I was just seeing if it would even work for the intake.:P If I can get to a swap meet I will and see if anyone has a cure for what ails me, lol, thanks guys.
