On my 95 F250, long bed, 351W I have a rough ride. I just replaced the shocks with Billstien and I think my tires are fine (in terms of them being stiff) so I have got to think it is my leaf springs, which I have all around. AFIK, the leaf springs are original (120K mikes).
Does anyone have some thoughts on this? What can I do to smoothe out the ride?
You might also want to consider replacing the leaf spring bushings (depending on how old they are.) The polyurethanes will last longer but the rubbers will give you a much better ride. My brother just went to all the trouble of replacing his leaf spring bushings with brand new polyurethanes and IMMEDIATELY went to the dealership to buy rubber ones and replaced them. I rode in his truck with the new polyurethanes and the ride was AWFUL.
I wouldn't say the '97 up have a smoother ride. My '87 F150 has 3/4 ton springs on it, and some ancient shocks on it, and quite frankly it has a smoother ride than my grandfather's '99 F150.
maybe I'll convert the front to coil springs and leave the back leaf springs, like my 92 F150. It's either that or get rid of this truck and get another...thinking of a 2000 F20 diesel. But I need to make a decision soon. I am considering installing headersn and a new exhaust (cat-back) system, which will involve a lot of $$...more than I want to spend if I am going to get another truck.
I think you can take some leafs out if you are more concerned with ride than capacity. you can also get some springs made that will do what ever you want. I dont think changing to coils is a viable option.

I agree with you about the coil conversion, I'm not sure that would be possible without swapping out the entire front end.
As for removing leaves, I don't think this would be a good idea if you have stock spring packs. Removing leaves from the front is a bad idea because Ford supplies enough leaves to properly support the weight of the engine while they supply enough in the rear to maximize the towing capacity of your truck.
