Fuel system upgrade

Im looking to upgrade my fuel pump to a higher volume unit. Has anyone upgraded there fuel pump to a performace model before? If so what unit should i be looking at? I couldnt find an in tank replacement that put out enough fuel to fully support 24lb injectors.

No need to, the stock fuel pump will pump up to 95 PSI and returns a large amount of gas to the tank to keep it from vapor locking.

Some will put an after market adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator on to up the pressure some.

Why would you want too?

I take it you are talking about your 1992 Truck.

Yea the 92, Im getting ready to finish up my motor in the next few months... money willing of course. Its should push anywhere from 350 to 400 HP. Not 100% positive where it will be at but all the estimates from my configurations and calculations get me right in that neighbor hood depending on cam choice.Id rather go with the cam thats putting me right around 380 FWHP. I have read that the stock fuel system is good for 350hp but I dont wanna short change myself over a fuel pump. So Im trying to figure out what fuel pump to use that will be an easy swap.

What combinaton of parts are you using to get that power?

There are no really easy swaps. I have tried several aftermarket pumps and only managed to fit a Holley 155lph(I believe) in the stock resovoir, even then it required some customization. The big problem is the resovoir, if you have a single tank vehicle you could eliminate the resovoir, but it holds check valves that prevent transfer between the tanks so it gets more complicated on a dual tank truck. All the aftermarket pumps I have seen are physically larger so they don't fit where the stock pump does.

Um a 9.86:1 short block with aluminumheads and a crane compucam. I have like any size steel braided hose for lines and AN fittings to match if it would be easier to just re plub the stupid thing. I want to toss the front tank since i never use it and its probobly got gel for gas by now. Not tomention that the front tank is hogging up all the fram rail space that a fat exhaust pipe could be sitting in. The lightning guys say there running like 650 HP of the stock pumps.....whats that all about? What do I need to do to safely support 370-380 hp? Even if its not easy......

Gotta throw this motor in and get it going in the next few months.

You can't compare a Lightning to these trucks, all the new ones are supercharged and have much bigger fuel systems from the factory. The Gen1 probably had a bigger pump than the regular trucks, maybe that's something you can investigate to see if it's adaptable. If you go with a single tank setup then it'll be a lot easier, remove the other tank and plug the lines, and then either run the rear tank without the resovoir or maybe employ a mustang style pickup assembly.

Yea I was in the gen1 nloc forum the other day and they were talking about it. How do I eliminate the front tank? Also Ive never been in this tank but what is the reservoir? I know the pump setup looks weird but I just figured I would run through the same pick up and use an in line pump or something.

Inside the tank there is a plastic canister about the size of a 1L pop bottle, the pump and check valves are contained within. The pump pulls fuel into this small chanber such that it's always submerged in a fuel bath, this helps cool it and lessens the chance of fuel starvation from the motion of the vehicle when the tank is only partially full. See here.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/91-97...QQcmdZViewItem

All you need to eliminate the front tank are a couple plugs for the send and return lines. I fabricated a couple from common engine studs one time, simply cut one threaded end off the stud leaving the smooth shaft, which plugs into the fuel line and is retained with the factory fuel line retainer clips. You'll have to drop the tank and take the lines off before you understand what I'm discribing, but it is pretty simple.
