Towing a CJ7 with a Ranger?

Hello all I just got a new to me 04 SC 2wd Edge with the 3.0 auto with the 4.10 open dif.

I want to flat tow my 86 CJ7 to the gulf of Mexico camping about 500 each way on some of the flattest roads in the world here in Texas.

My question is do you think I should go with a class IV hitch or just run with the bumper?

There will be almost no tounge weight but the jeep weighs in around 3500-3750 depending on fuel and top options.

Anyone ever try to tow a jeep and have any advice or experience?

Thanks in advance
JM

If it helps any I tow a 24 foot boat that has to weigh 2.5 time what a CJ anything would. This with the bumper. The only problem I have is stopping. It's the Ranger in my Sig. Also pull auto transport. I really need ta get brakes on my trailers. HAAAAA

I've pulled a ranger with a cj, so whats good for the goose is good for the gander as they say. However, it wasn't 500 miles, needless to say. I seen no problem with a 3.0 and 4:10 gears, the bumper may work, but I would feel better with a hitch myself. Does your ranger have a tranny cooler, you may want one for such a long pull in the heat of summer to insure your tranny as a long life. If any thing goes wrong, just reverse it and pull the ranger with the jeep, your set either way hee hee.

The Ranger does have the stock cooler. I may put a bigger one on just to make me feel better. Then again I got a 10 yr 100k Warranty on the new girl for peace of mind.

I know the jeep could tow the ranger but I dont think my old abused liver and kidneys could handle 1000 miles on the interstate in a 86 CJ7 Bwaahahahahaha!

It's a jeep thing and you do understand ha ha. Good luch and happy wheeling, I'm a jeep nut myself, I'm fixing to buy a 91 YJ, 4.0 and 5-speed this weekend if everything goes right. I've had 6 CJ's in my life, thier a fun hobby. Fords and jeeps are all I've ever owned or will own.

If I had a vehicle I intended to keep and pull trailers with for any length of time, I'd invest in a receiver hitch.

I pull my little trailer with the bumper on mine, but it's light, and the truck is old and will NEVER pull anything heavy.
