Here's the deal.. I've had the truck (94 ranger 4.0 4x4 auto) in my garage doing some engine work to it. got it all fired up, drove it to my brothers place because i've been doing some work on it for him.
We took it for a test drive and when we got back the tranny was leaking. It was leaking between the bellhousing and the engine. We checked the level and it was over the cross hatch section on the stick by about 1/2 an inch. Is this tranny toast or is it just because when my brother changed the filter he overfilled the tranny?
We know he overfilled it, because they told him it took like 9 quarts of fluid at the auto parts store, but he didnt realize that was with the tranny completely empty (and TQ converter). SO he has allready drained the fluid once to get it to the right level.
Also would you recommend not driving the truck until its done, or is it okay to drive it back.

Tranny is most likely fine. If the tranny is overfilled, it will come out of the breather vent/cap when it foams up sometimes. Usually just leaks by the seal.
If you drained the extra fluid, should be okay to drive. Just make sure the engine/tranny/transfer case bolts are tight.
well thats some good news. This truck was a big project with the headers and everything, and now we got it all together and go figure, something is messed up with it. Glad to hear it should be an easy fix though.
