Towing capacity increase with a supership
I have a 2001 Mountaineer with the V8, same as the Eddie Bauer Explorer. I am looking to tow a boat which weighs 7000 pounds with the trailer. I know with the V8 I am the Merc can tow 6760, I have been told by salesman, no comment, that with the chip I would be able to easilly increase capacity to high 7's to mid 8000 pound area. Anyone experience such a dramatic increase and is this realistic with only a chip replacement. thanks.

Towing capacity is determined by the braking, frame, suspension and payload capacity of the vehicle. While a chip will give more horsepower, you're asking for trouble towing beyond the rated capacity of the vehicle. A chip is not going to increase towing capacity by 15% - 21%.
Matter of fact, it won't increase it by 1 pound. What it will do, however, is make towing within the rated capacity more enjoyable.

Whoa! There's no way in heck I'd even attempt to tow 7k with a Mountianeer. That's probabally too much for an Expedition. Forget what Ford says it can tow and look at the other numbers. GVWR and GCWR. GVWR is what the Mountaineer can weigh with passengers, fuel, options, gear, hitch, etc. GCWR is total vehicle plus trailer. Find what Ford lists the GCWR as then subtract what your loaded Mountaineer weighs and that is how much you have left over for a trailer. I'd suggest a well equipped 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck or Expedition or Excursion.
