My truck started exhibiting the classic symptoms of a failing VSS/ABS sensor this past weekend. Last evening, I pulled it out, cleaned it, and re-installed. Seemed to do the trick, but I only took it for one very short test drive. Time will tell.
My question is: What is the function of the other, similar looking sensor on top the transmission to t-case extension? It is hard to get a look at, but looks very similar. Looks as though the connector is different, but it is still a 2 wire connection. It certainly appears to be another speed sensor.
I don't know about that one, but I would say 99% of the time the sensor that goes bad is the vss in the rear pumpkin. Your front ABS sensors can and do get dirty from brake dust and road crap if your seals go bad (dry rot) but usually replacing the vss will fix the problem.
I don't think so. I believe that the trans temp gauge did not appear until 2002 - my 2000 does not have one - and I don't think that trans temp was monitored just for the PCM. Also, this would be an odd location for a temp sensor - far away from the fluid reservoir (pan) which is what we normally are speaking of when talking trans temperature.
i'd go with a new differential speed sensor.... i had same issue in my f150..replaced it and boom issue went out....i also noticed when i pulled it out it smelled like puke...and lots of grinding left overs...so i did a complete differential fluid change....
lol dont ask me..fluid fell all over! even with a pot on .....
