OE radio question

Does anyone know if the factory radio in a '93 EXT XLT has an aux output on the back? I'd like to add an iPlug for my iPod but I'm not going to remove it to find out if I can just ask you all.

Thanks in advance.

You would need an auxillary input to plug in an I-pod. The headphone ports are audio outputs.

The factory radio doesn't have any line level audio inputs to tap on in the harness.

The best bet would be to use an FM modulator and broadcast through the radio no wiring required.

The only way to plug an I-Pod directly would be to buy a new head unit with that capability.

Some head units usually have a plug for the I-Pod right on it.

While some units have it as an option where you plug the cable from the module to the back of the unit and you can mount the input plug wherever you like.

Thanks. I'll stick with my iPod FM xmitter. It's a little messy but it works.

I agree, the OE radio is aweful. The amplifier produces a lot of distortion and the OE wiring setup doesn't help. I ran new wires to the speakers, went with a Clarion head unit, and the front speakers are driven directly by the player. The rear speakers use a 200W amplifier, plus I have a subwoofer as well. But there is no way you will get good sound though a factory unit.

I would say the minumum setup to get good sound is to bypass the factory speaker wire, and run new wire, plus new speakers and drive them odd the head unit. To run the rearmost speakers in the hatch, you will either need an amplifier for the rear, or a head unit that can support 8 ohm speakers. You would run the hatch speakers in series with the mid speakers. If you run in parallel you will get 2 ohm which will destroy your amp. With the external amp method, use an amplifier that has 4 channels and run the back speakers off those. Each speaker would have dedicated connection to an amplifier this way. The sound quality would be very good at this point.

My system has 5 speakers, 2 up front, 2 mid and the sub. I have a total peak output of 590 watts. I am not the soft to crank it up however, but I really ticked off some punks the other day by pulling up next to them (they had their Rap music rumbling the floorboards) and cranking up some Vivaldi. lol. My system was actually much louder.

Is this the separate OE amp that should be replaced?

I have a Panasonic slide-mount head unit that is probably better than the OE head unit and it has aux inputs. I used it for a little while in my Mercedes before I sold the gas hog. The only problem is it is a cassette model, not CD. That may not be an issue if I use the iPod.

If the real culprit is the amp, then maybe I should replace it instead of the PITA work it takes to replace the head unit.

The real culprit is the wiring. I am in favor of using an adapter harness , but run new wires for the speakers and any buzzing and distortion should simply vanish.

It is not so difficult to rewire. I did it.
