Hi I have a 1992 E-250 ECONOLINE L6 4.9 Liter FI and the check ENG light is been on for the longest time 2 years, I had cold start problem and change the IAC and temp sensors replaced, the cold start went 70% a way but today went for smog test and all pass but the technician because the EGN light remains on i had to fix it before passing it. any ideas?...............thanks
Auto Zone, maybe Pep Boys, others, will take the reading for you, seeking to sell you the items in the path to resolution. Always look over the shoulder and make a good record of the exact number(s), and there may be several listed, sequentially. There may also be a suggested 'fix' given, which I am sure you will be told as gospel.
Come back on the forum with the numbers, and someone will be able to help you (not me, I am a novice).
Check engine light, if on when there is not a problem, can be reset via battery disconnect, allow to sit 1/2 hour, or leave lights on until they fade fully, then reconnect battery (try Negative cable disconnect only).
The system will reset, and if there are no faults, then no lights! Maybe you want to do this about 5 minutes prior to getting the thing inspected, so the CEL does not alight anew...just out of habit.

thanks I will try this now and report back ........
Keep asking, that is often what they tell you, but they often are capable of reading fault codes on OBD-1 vehicles.

In my town I found Pep Boys was the only one that said they could read OB-1, but discovered Advance also had the device to do it too.
I finally broke down & invested in an Innova 3145 digital code reader after being told they could not read fault codes unless the CEL was on! Counting & recording flashes is no fun. IMO it was a bargain & one of the better ebay deals. My intermittent problem was illuminating the CEL inappropriately & not often.

this code readers do the same thing you can do "count" so I video tape the test and than sat down and count in my lesser.
This is FYI.... What I did fist remove the neg. battery cable and reconnect 1/2 later next started the ENG and run it for 2 min. Next check the code again and guess what now I had one code to deal with the ECT sensor [the last batch of codes i posted here wer left overs] and would know it I had this sensor replaced 8 months ago and the wire going to it had one of this useless snap on connectors the wire was cut and barely touching after conecting it the ENG light turnd off. So the smog test OK and....... thanks again.......
