hi everyone i am doing a swap from a 95 302 mazda 5spd to a 88 460 zf 5spd. but the problem is the 460 is 2x4, so my guestion is there any differance in zf's 4x4 and 2x4. and does the zf hook up to the transfer case or do i need an adapter or something. i would greatly apreciate the info. thxs
You really need a 4x4 version of the ZF, plus the 460 ZF will not bolt to the 302, so you need one that fits the 300/302/351W on the front end. Once you get a 4x4 small block ZF, it should bolt right in place of the Mazda transmission. Others know this for sure, but I think the length is slightly different between the two, but I don't know that it is enough to require different driveshafts.
The 4x2 and the 4x4 transmissions have diffrent tail shafts. you can change the tail shaft but it requires taking apart the whole transmission
the big block zf-5 (460 and diesel) or M5HD-W has a diffrent bell housing, bolt pattern and gear ratios.
I wish that you could just put the t case on and have a 4x4 but its not that easy. I was looking at it becasue i want to change my truck from 4X2 to 4X4.
