ford or dodge

im looking at two different trucks. one is a 2003 ford f150 lariat which has every option imaginable including a sun roof and has the 5.4 triton v8. it has 88,000 miles on it and has a few dings.

the other is a 2002 dodge ram 1500 slt with a 4.7 v8 and it has 71000 miles on it and it is in immaculate shape.

any know if dodge or ford has any known problems with their engines?

Well, the ford sounds better...bigger engine and so many options. If it isn't in good condition don't go for it, i wouldn't buy something that has to many problems. But hear you're going to be getting a lot of biased answers...it is a ford forum after all.

good luck,
TJ

well personally i would say go for the ford. but it also depends on what your buying the truck for. Towing, recreation driving, or just a plain drive/haul work truck. the ford does sound like a better option with bigger motor and alot more options but its your choice. as for problems, i havent really seen alot of problems on either trucks engine/driveline wise. and this is coming from a guy with 3 years at a ford dealer and almost 7 months at a dodge dealer. both trucks are pretty much very reliable driveline wise if you follow maint schedules. good luck with your decision.

Those 4.7l are worthless... My 4.6l makes fun of them so bad... I drove my girlfriends dads new crew cab with the 4.7l and it absolutly had no *****... I was disapointed in it.

I thought maybe dodge had a new thing to replace the 318(which sucked to) like ford did with the 5.0 ...

The 5.4l will run circles around that truck... and to boot...you will never need a new transmission... or shouldnt..

Better do the right thing....get the FORD..

Welcome to the forum

The Dodges are known to have weak tranny's. I have an 01 F150 with the 5.4L and it has been a great truck.

I tow with a 5.9L Dodge 1500 and a 5.4L F150. I tow 4000lbs with the Dodge, and the Ford tows twice that just as easy. Just put two horses on a stock trailer tag-a-long a few hours ago, the Dodge's hitch was 6" off the ground. Next trip put a 2000lbs draft and two other horses on the same trailer attached to my F150 and it looked just as high as the Dodge did without the trailer hooked up.

the dodge trannys have problmes, they are weak as lxman1 said, the dodges look nice though, i was in your same predicament about a year ago, lookin at a dodge with the 4.7 or a ford with the 5.4, I went with the Ford simply because the engine was larger for about the same price. The two trucks were nearly the same trim package level and the same condition, i went with the ford and never looked back, it was a great choice, never had any major problems that werent caused by me doing things i shouldnt

I had a 3rd gen Dodge before I bought my recent Ford, so hopefully I can provide some less biased opinions and insight.

The Dodge- The main thing I can fault it for is the lack of rear seat room. The back seat will be cramped for anyone other than a teen, especially with a tall driver. The tranny behind that 4.7L is actually better and has less problems than the Ford 4R75W tranny. It is there new 545-RFE tranny. The problematic Dodge trannies left with the new body change. The 4.7L motor is an excellent motor and has a good track record. No plugs blowing out, etc. It provides about the same numbers as the Ford 4.6L. If you are hauling a bunch, the Dodge will have a bigger bed.

The Ford- The main thing I can fault the Ford for is the plug blow out issue, but that should not be a problem. It has a bigger back seat and I like the look of this model. It beats the Dodge in terms of comfort and power.

Personally, I'd pick the Ford.

Beg to differ, but working at both a Ford dealership and a Dodge dealership for many years. The Ford tranny has a way better track record than even the new dodge trans. Dodge trans has been having pump issues in the 45rfe!
