2000 Expy Compass Displays Wrong Direction

Okay, so not only is it the wrong direction, but it's the opposite direction of the way you are going. So if you're going north it shows south. Anyone know why? Any help fixing it is appreciated.

I have an '02 with a digital compass overhead. It details in the owners manual how to calibrate the compass based on your region in the county. Possibly just calibrated wrong.

yeah, it's pretty easy to recalibrate them. If you had the battery disconnected for a while that will cause it, or sometimes they just drift and need to be recalibrated. the procedure goes something like this...

1) Find a big empty parking lot
2) Reset the compass
3) Drive around in a circle 3 or 4 times until the compass resets itself.

I had the same problem a number of years ago in my '99 Expy where the unit read 180 degrees wrong. I tried to recalibrate it a number of times as per the manual as suggested by blackout150 and pitrow above but the compass would not recalibrate. I ended up changing out the sensor unit and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I'll try the recalibration first, but assuming that won't work, where is the sensor unit and how is it replaced? Also, where did you get a new one. Thanks.

Okay, well the recalibration didn't work.

I held down both button with just the compass showing on the display and then drove around in a circle and the direction never corrected. Is this the proper way to reset the compass?

If so, how do I replace the sensor until for the compass? Thanks.

Frank

I am not sure on yours but most of them are under the rear view mirror and should have some sort of plug in there.

Had the same problem, found the compass which is mounted on the rear view mirror was mounted backwards.

Yep found the same problem with mine. Quick fix. Now to get it to mount a little more solid on there. It kinda flops around.

To get the compass to mount more solid, I used velcro with a sticky back surface. My problem started after getting my car washed, someone must have knocked it off the mirror while washing the inside front window. But I am sure there are better ideas.

Would that matter? A compass should work no matter what direction its pointed, right?

Seeing how this is not a compass (needle) but rather a sensor on a computer board it does seem to make a diff. When you look at the sensor box you can tell it's made to be mounted a particular direction. Mine was turned the opposite direction. Once I corrected this the display of course now shows the correct directions.
