I tried to extract a plug shield using a 9mmx1mm tap and it broke off inside the shield, leaving nothing to grab. Looks like I'll be trying anything for the next few days before I put it in the shop for head removal. I wish I would have paid the $375 the dealer wanted to get the 2 shields I have stuck in the driver side head.
I also called my local Ford Dealer here in Denver Colorado...I was told they recommend changing them before 70K, they have only had a couple issues out of all the trucks they have done ("about two dozen or so") and all of them were after 70K miles. They also said the only plugs that have given them problems is the back ones. They told me that if they do break one that it is $40.00 a plug for each one broke because they have to use a "Special Tool".
I agree with most everyone else this is a total load of crap...this is definitely a design flaw and Ford should be responsible for the dealers who break them not us consumers.
Ford should stand up and do the right thing. If there really is a solution, then all affected customers trucks should be fixed right now on Ford's dime. But I fear ford is running out the clock, thereby lessening their financial impact. At the very least they should extend the engine warranties on these trucks.
My 2004 FX4 JUST had the plugs changed, complete fuel system flush, other maintance at 61,000 miles, installed Magna Flow duals inplasce of the rOTTED off Flowmaster setup i had! FOUR plugs broke off!! The dealership spent OVER 11 hours on plugs alone! NOW...the dealership/FORD ponied up the $$$$ for anything over the regular $$$ to change my plugs. I've always had excellent luck with the FORD dealership i go to here in Illinois. They also do alot of performance parts installing also!! NOW...i'm getting ready to hopefully (if $$$ holds out)do the roush blower!! YIPPEEEEEEEE Joe
