I have just come across a 2004 F350SD dually with the 6.0l PS
I am thinking about trading my 2000 F250 SD with the 7.3l PS
they are both crew cabs with long boxes both are 4wd both autos. My 250 just turned 198000 while the 350 has only 26000?? IS there any problems associated with the 6.0 or with the 04's in general I should know about before I go to the dealer tomorrow?
im not sure about the problems in the 04's...it is only the 2nd year for the 6.0 and i know the 03's were problomatic....the 7.3 is definaltley a much more reliable motor than the 6.0...if your 7.3 isnt giving you problems now i would hang onto it!!!
I have an 04 6.0 with 40,000 miles and have had no trouble. There is alot of fear mongering out there about the 6.0. Do not believe all of it. Like anything there were trucks that had problems but plenty that did not. Do have an oasis report done and follow regular sched. maint. and you will be very happy with the six as well as the torque shift tranny.
I's a report from the Ford database, specific to the vehicle (listed by VIN) that shows all warranty and dealer work done to the vehicle.
It will give you some insight on the vehicle, is the engine a lemon, was it maintaned, what kind of problems did the previous owner have........stuff like that.
All 6.0L were problemmatic! The early ones were the worst. Thats why they totally dropped the design and came out with the all new 6.4L.
The 6.0L costing Ford hundreds of millions of dollars in warranty repairs and leading to a recall and repurchase of 500 trucks (due to the Lemon Law). The major problem with the Navistar diesel engines are due to damage resulting from defective fuel injectors, which suffer from side loading, which then causes raw fuel to flood and enter the engine's oil crankcase or hydro-lock the engine. The previous occurrence is so disastrous that a total engine replacement is often required. There were also minor problems resulting from the unreliable factory variable-vane turbocharger, head gasket problems, EGR valve carbon deposit clogging/sticking, defective Exhaust Pressure (EP) sensor/connector, extensive PCM recalibrations, fuel injector harness chafing/crushing, general engine stalling/bucking, various oil leaks, and inability to conform to the new Federal diesel emissions standards of January 1, 2007.
Of course myself and numerous people I know with way more miles on there vehichles than mine have not run into these problems, so not all 6.0 are problematic. Also the 6.0 was replaced just like the 7.3 because it is true that it could not meet new EPA laws
By all means i know the 7.3 is the most reliable and good engine out of them all but the only reason for came out with the 6.0l was because the 7.3 gave out too many emisions or some crap but i know for the 6.0l 2003 and 04 where the worst for problems after that 05 06 07 arent too bad
I would do some carefull checking into before you get an 04. They were in the questionable years of the 6 liter.
If it is a pretty straight trade it might be worth it if the truck seems to be ok.
You might get much worse of a deal if the truck turns out to be one of the bad ones though!
I also would not go so far as to say ALL 6.0 PSD engines are problematic. The 6.0 did have it's warts, but from what I see (being a 5.4L driver) some of the engines (maybe 10%) had issues. Those issues were normally solved during the warranty period, with maybe 5% of those vehicles actually being returned under a lemon law. So, by my own totally unscientific CWAG (Calculated Wild A$$ Guess) standards, 2 trucks out of 100 are lemons and should be avoided.
An Oasis report will shed light on whether this is one of the lemons.
On the flip side, I would also say the 6.0 is more reliable than the 7.3. Once you get a good 6.0 it runs pretty much forever. The 7.3, on the other hand, has that CPS issue that doesn't go away.
I'm sure some 7.3 owners will take issue with my opinion, but that's OK also.
Merlin....I have an 03 with the 6.0 and have not had any problems with it and I'm as happy as a clam with the truck.
Yes, some of the early 6.0s had issues...but not all.
As Redford said, run an OASIS. If the truck had lots of motor work done...I'd probably stay away from it. In my case, I just bought this truck back in Feb. The OASIS report showed no motor issues...so I paid 1400 for an extended warranty (just to be sure) and have put over 11K miles on it since Feb with not a single issue!
Do not be afraid of the 6.0....just run an OASIS BEFORE you buy one.
What is an Oasis report? I tried looking it up on web, but got nowhere
Go to the 6.0 L forum and the top thread is dedicated to OASIS reports. Put the vin number in there and one of the local techs will run the report for you and give good info on what to think of it all.
