almost there

recently got my 76 f150 registered, inspected and insured so I could drive it again. It is now street legal again after four years of sitting in the garage. I think the only original things under the hood are the brake booster and the power steering pump.
I have had the hardest time figuring out the timing. The original rebuilders had it bumped way up with vacumm advance and I had it retimed because I was told that it would prematurely kill the motor. It never ran that well again. I recently bumped it up just a little and tried to time it by ear. It seems to have the throttle response that I remembered right after the rebuild but it just doesnt seem quite right yet. Once it is at operating temp it idles pretty rough and a little high at 800 rpms. It does other little things like: a lot of lifter noise if i turn it off and restart it a few minutes later after it has been running hard. I cant tell if I need to go and get someone to time and tune the carb for me or what. I have an edelbrock 600 on it and a one step up rv cam as well. cant seem to find anyone who really knows where the timing on this thing should be for optimal performance. thoughts?
