Ok, I believe some of you do not like the thermal bypass valve.. But my question is. I live in pa, there will be nights i start my truck to leave work were it will be at 0 or close to it. Does cold runing temps harm a trany? Or is this not like engines where cooler temperatures can cause more wear?
In your case, you really should leave the bypass valve in. So far to date I have not heard of one person wearing out a 4r100 due to cold tranny fluid. Obviously you'll need some circulating. I have added the trucool cooler on mine and usually have about 1 week or so of sub zero temperatures, trans does eventually come up to temp. If really worried you could always get a snap on grill cover.
Alright I was just wondering. i am still runing the factory cooler atleast right now but i have seen the kits with the valve and didnt know what direction i should go either with or without them. And speaking of the snap on grille covers. Where is a good place to get them?
The factory bypass on the 4R100 is mounted on the transmission itself, not on the cooler. Aftermarket coolers like the Tru-Cool Max offer a unit with or without their bypass. If you purchase one of these, you want to get the one without a bypass since it is already on the tranny.

A number of experts have pointed out on this forum that the factory bypass is a PRESSURE bypass, designed to insure that the rear of the tranny continues to get lubricated if the cooler circuit, for example, gets plugged. It is the bypass options on aftermarket coolers that are thermal bypasses.

Yes the factory is a pressure bypass, but the tran fluid itself acts like a thermal bypass. When it is cold it will not flow through the cooler at the same rate as when it is up to temperature or even hot. If you look at the specs on some of the coolers they even mention a temperature range at which the fluid starts to flow through the cooler core and not just around the larger gap on the outside edges of the cooler.
As for the grill cover, check out cabelas, I know they have some nice ones. I have seen a few that I really liked but not sure if they where custom made or not as I haven't seen them for sale anywhere. The one I liked had both a winter blanker with fold open vents that velcro back, and a summer bug screen. I just think some of the winter blankets look cool, lets everyone know your truck is treated nice.
