Does anyone know how to get rid of the chimes when the door is open and key in ignition in acc position?? I'd like to get rid of all of them but that one is the most annoying. It doesn't do it with the key in the on position, does
it hurt anything to leave it in the on position with the engine off??
I usually turn off everything but the radio when I do this.
What year is your truck? In my 94 (which is EEC IV with a distributer cap, not OBD-II with coil packs) there was simply a little box under the dash that made the chiming noise. I unplugged it and tossed it in the back seat. I've never looked back.
45, 44 mag, 30/30, or 12 gauge all have been known to work. However locating the source of the chime and disconecting is good advice and less messy. Leaving the key in the on position does draw on the battery, so you don't want to do that for long periods of time.
The chimes switch is activated by the door latch (on my 99 it is). If you want to leave the doors open with the key on all you have to do is open the door and use a screwdriver and trip the latch and the chimes will not sound. Just remember to unlatch the latch before closing the door. I tie a rag around the window to remind me.
I personally prefer to keep the chime for all things OTHER than the door being open with the keys in the ignition, that way I can listen to the radio with the door open, but it'll also let me know if I leave the lights on, etc.
To do this, find the red/white wire, test it to make sure it has 12V when the proper conditions are met (door open, key in ignition), then cut said wire. Wire colors may have changed, so of course I do not recommend you just go randomly cutting without testing for voltage first. I'll find out the wire colors for sure tommorow, I'm about to pass out right now.
If you want the radio or whatever, use the ACC position, it's designed for just that, without running the computer, fuel pump, readying the engine to start, etc.
Where are these wires located?? I like to listen to the radio with the door open and would rather use the acc position instead of the on position except for the chimes. It was easy on my 97 250 but I can't find the "black box" on the ranger.
Under the dash, there's a huge plug that goes through the firewall, it can be found coming off of said plug. The chime module itself is also located under the dash.
There is a Ranger "door chime mod" posted over at the RPS and Generation Edge sites. Look in the Electrical forums. In a nutshell, you install a small pushbutton to silence the chime when the ignition is in the ACC position and the driver's door is open. What's nice about the mod is that once the ignition is taken out of ACC positon the system reverts back to normal and the chime works just like before. I'd bet you can get something similar to work on your '06.
I performed the door chime mod on my '98 and it comes in very handy. It has even provided me some unexpected features:
On my '99 ranger I was able to take off the two plastic pieces around steering column and unplug the little wire near the key. Got rid of door chime with key on. all other chimes still worked, which was exactly what I wanted. I have an 04 f150 now, and will try the same thing, someday. Very easy to and not permanant.... maybe it would work on your 06
