Oil for the 4.9L

Hey again guys, I'm back with another overly simple question I'm too dumb to figure out.

So Ole' Betsy is well past 200K miles. I was wondering if I should start using High Milage Oil? Is it worth it? What kind do you use? I currently use 10W30, was using 10W40. I live in a very hot and very humid area. I could use some tips on oil!

I appologize if this topic has been beat to death.. I really doubt nobody has asked this before, but search didn't turn up anything so maybe not.

Anyway thanks in advance!

Try the Oil Forum. It has been beat ad infinitum, ad absurdum, ad nauseum.

I personally use the exact same oil I've always used in it, haven't changed yet and with 227K miles it hasn't leaked a drop or burns any yet. I always run pennzoil 10W30, I haven't tried any other oils in it. Haven't really felt the need to change. It's went this far with it, I wouldn't risk changing to another type of oil. Just do the same type of maintenance you have been doing. Just my opinion.

I don't see where the risk is in changing oil type. As the engine ages and wears a thicker oil may be useful. I'd get an oil pressure gauge and see what's going on. If the pressure is below spec, may want to thicken a bit. Could run mix of 10w30 with 10w40 or go straight 10w40 like I run in my '95. High mileage oil would be fine also. Some HM is a bit thicker, some not.

Read an article in on of the car mags, Car Craft I think, about how the basic oil is being "changed" in the formula, and that it is supposed to become a problem for older motors. Can't remember what the missing components are, but they recommended a oil for diesel engines to ensure that the older motor gets the stuff it needs.
I'll do some digging and see if I still have that issue around.

Well, I ran that high mileage stuff you get at wal-mart It's supposed to replace a quart of oil when you change it. I ran it in my truck for about a month and the rear main seal started leaking. I have been pretty skeptical about these "snake oils" since. I just run what I've always ran, and if it starts to leak I'll put some thicker oil in it, but as for now I'm gonna run the same thing.

Thanks a lot guys for all of the imput. I'll look around and see what my options are. I'll probably just stick with my current oil or go a little thicker.

God bless

Rotella T 15w40, Believe it or not but it sticks to the parts longer once shut down and provides good lube on start up. Truckers love the stuff, Cam MFG's reccomend it. like the other posts, it still has the same type formula as old style oil. Well good luck

I always laugh when I respond to an oil question. The reason is because I use the oil that alot of people seem to hate due to it's wax build up... supposedly.

203k on my 300. Doesn't leak a drop, doesn't burn a drop, oil changed RELIGIOUSLY at 3k about every 2 months.

6 quarts of Pennzoil straight 30W, 1 bottle of STP oil treatment, and a Motorcraft FL1A filter.

I've been running this oil in it since i've had my truck... about 100k ago... I took off the valve cover recently, and you could eat off of the insides of this engine.

Pennzoil only gets nasty for those fools that wait 6k to change oil... on CONVENTIONAL oil.

If you wait that long, do it with synthetic.

hey, same here. I run pennzoil in everything I have. I have put a many miles on my trucks with pennzoil, and I haven't had a problem with it EVER. Same with Fram oil filters...I've heard about them busting on other forums, but I have yet to have a single problem out of one.

My Ford 300 sixes get Valvoline 10w30 or 10w40 depending on the season... thicker in the warmer months and lighter oil in the colder months. I use Purolater oil filters, I add a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer every other oil change, and I like to change my oil every 2000 miles because I tend to work my trucks pretty hard... to me it's good insurance.

Hi I am new.

I am deaf, I used motor oil supertech 10W30 + fram oil filter in my 1984 ford 300 I6 2WD still low mileage 104,557. There no problem I have change oil for 2 to 3 months I didn't follow on 3k every mileage. Because I am not much drive around town. Still good running smooth.

Hi Chris, welcome to FTE. I would stay away from the FRAM oil filters. I used to run FRAM in my rig until recently. I switched to Motorcraft. Since then my oil pressure has consistantly been higher (by 10 psi if I remember correctly).
