Which Mufflers?

I should be sending my 67 F-250 to the shop next week to replace the headers and then on to the muffler shop to complete the exhaust. It has a 390 with a 600 cfm Edelbrock 4 bbl.....the headers are the DynoMax 86055 (the ones *only* that seem to fit the "highboy")......

Currently, I have the same set up on there, and at the ends of the headers, there are simply 2 glasspacks attached, dumping out underneath the cab......very loud and raunchy! lol So, the new system will be taking the exhaust exits to the back of the truck....but I'm not sure I'f I should get a new set of "Purple Hornies" glasspacks or go with a traditional FloMax muffler? what are the differences I will (or will not) notice between the two? Also, I've been offered the option for an exhaust "crossover" or "x-pipe." What are the benefits/drawbacks of using this as well?

My advise is to with the crossover or X-pipe. A properly designed crossover with produce more torque, especially in the low end of the powerband. I do recommend it. It also changes the exhaust tone to make it smoother. The change will be subtle. Crossovers can also improve fuel economy.

flowmasters for sure, they sound great on a 390, right now mine has cherry bombs into 3'' smokestacks, which sounds great, but i still think either flows or borlas would be perfect! (i know someone who has two 2-1/2'' borlas for cheep . )

Magnaflow mufflers have the best sound IMO.
Good performance, too.

I like the old Corvair Turbo mufflers. I put a set from NAPA on my truck in 1985 and they are still rust free.

here one of those areas you can spend a bunch, for this muffler or that.i like cheap and functional with a good sound.ive found that just a set of good ol thrush turbos($17.99ea localy here) with 2 1/2" pipes on each side works pretty darn good.ive run mine that way for years on diferent stuff.my 71's that way now true dualls with the thrush turbos, headman headers. it sounds nice and isnt to loud to draw attention from the law

I just put a set of Hooker Comp headers on mine with the Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers. To be honest, it isn't what I expected.

With the X-pipe....should I pick that out and bring it in....are there many choices that amke any real difference? Or can the shop be trusted to put in what is appropriate?

on my 69 f100 360 i'm runnin hooker headers with cherry bombs and 2" pipes goin out each side in front of the tires. gets louder and better everyday, i like how cherry bombs burn up after a few months. i wouldnt worry too much about how loud it is, in my opinion the louder the better, and for a cop to bust you he has to whip out a decible meter and the rpms have to be at 2200 i think? maybe 2500, somewhere around there, and if u dont have a tach too bad. all i do is say hey its got mufflers there glasspacks take a peek

I'm running a set of Flowmaster 40 series true dual on my 65 with a 302; If I ever go back to Flowmaster; I would invest in the 50 series. Not as loud of a tone. Especially running out in front of the rear tires as on mine.

right now im running 40 series flowmaster dumping out in front of the rear tires also, but this is not the sound im looking for. within the next 2 months im replacing the flowmaster with the powersticks, sound clips to follow before and after. i just want to be able to set off car alarms in parking lots, and drown out that awwwwfullll rap junk. and blow exhaust in the litter rice burners. lol

On our '65 with 5.0 HO with headers to save a few bucks we went with the FORCE 2.5" inlet with dual 2.5 outlet the dual pipes exit in front to the rear wheels on both sides and sound very, very nice. These mufflers did not cost much at all... We have then behind an H pipe. Another thing my boys wanted and I installed is a pair of the exhaust cutout. While not a race truck my sons found a new pair on ebay so I went a head and welded them in. Heck the cutouts do look cool...

powersticks? whats that?
all i know is i've been thinkin about removin my cherry bombs and just runnin straight pipes. i heard it with just headers when i was installin em and wow that was freakin loud, but with these pipes the length they are i think it will be perfect.

powersticks are chambered mufflers, small in diameter. mine are 20" long. since they are small in diameter, they will fit better tucked up between the drive shaft and frame. the flow masters are just below the frame rails. just go to www.powerstick.com they have sound clips.

I just bought a set of 22in magnaflows, I like that they are not chambered like flowmasters. I hope that because they are about 8in longer than most other mufflers sound will be nice
