I've done this on my 88 F350 and we had to raise the motor about 4" to get the oil pan out. Changing the pump was tricky so I had my local mechanic come to my shop and install the pump and rear seal while we did the grunt work.
bought a truck that was sitting for 2 years. Brake lines all bad so I replaced them. When I took truck for a ride, 1/2 mile, started sounding like no oil was getting to lifters. I assume pan is gunked up and maybe oil pump went. Everytime I ran the truck to move it around before it sounded fine, no lifter niose. Truck has 100,000 miles. I am thinking about hooking up an oil gage, pulling distributer, and spinning with a drill to see if I have oil pressure first.
I'm surprised your truck didn't have an oil pressre guage in it. The sending unit should be on the left side front just above the power steering pump. If you have to install your own guage that is where the hole should be. It may also require an extension tube to put the sending unit far enough away from the block. LMC truck has both the tube and the sending unit.
Thanks for input. I am going on a week vacation and think about this. I am definitly going to check oil pressure before attempting replacement of pump. The truck has a oil pressure gauge but it never moves so I am not sure if it works, that is hwy I am going to put a mechanical gauge on it and because I don't want to do damage to the motor I will try running the pump with a drill. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to do?
