Really Weird Promblem

Okay this has only happened twice, once was very brief kinda scared me but went away. It happened again the other day. Seems like out of the blue. Whenever I turn the wheel or push the brakes theres a wining noise and the peda & wheel pulsate as i turn or push them. I'm thinkin maybe a vacuum pump but it did it with the steering wheel too??? And I just ended up pushing the break pedal really hard and it stopped , I dont know if thats what made it stop or not??

SO is my truck dyeing? 205,400miles still runs like a scaled dog

Thats your powersteering pump telling you its time to change the fluid. I had the same thing, changed the fluid to Mobile1 syn ATF problem gone. To change it just remove the return line going to the PS pump, route it to an empty bucket. Start the truck and have a buddy turn the wheel back and fourth while pumping the brakes. Then just start pouring the new ATF into the reservoir. Dont let the reservoir empty, and when you see the clean ATF coming back out the return your done. I used 4qrts for the flush.

Josh - Unlike the early cummins and some other diesels, your powerstroke doesn't have a vaccuum pump...it doesn't need one. Your PSD utilizes the power steering pump for brake assist. When you are turning the wheel and pushing on the brakes, it's putting pressure on the system and the pump will start to whine. I think the whine is normal, almost all pumps whine. Like the other member said, though, you'll want to check your fluid and perhaps even flush your pump out. You might have a pump that's getting ready to take a poop, too. My PSD had about 169,000 miles on it before I had to replace mine...it kept eating my serpentine belt.

Your pump is located on the driver's side, near the front of the motor. You will see a black twist off cap. The pumps are made to use the same ATF your transmission does, but lots of times people put PS fluid in there and it makes the pump whine. The PS fluid won't hurt your pump, but it's not necessarily good for it either.

Flush procedure from Guzzle:
You will need about 1 gallon on Mercon/Dexron III tranny fluid. Remove the low pressure (return line) hose that comes out of the reservoir for the PS pump. With a 3/8 nipple and a clear piece of 3/8'' ID hose attached to the return hose, run the hose to a bucket sitting on the ground. It will be easier if you get someone to press the pedal firmly but slowly, and turn the steering wheel several times while you keep filling the pump reservoir. When the color of the fluid in the clear hose changes from the "dirty" red to the fresh color of your new fluid, you are finished.

If you have not flushed your brake fluid, this would also be a good time to do that as it is also easier with two. The brake fluid should be flushed every 2 years.

So AM I to beleave that actually useing PS Fluid(ex. Gunk PS fluid) is not recomended, and I should actually use AT fluid instead? The reason why I ask is cause for some reason while the customtruck shop was installing my leveling kit the PS Fluid Res cap poped off and leaked out all the fluid, I didnt notice it until about a week later and imeadiatly ordered a new cap (so it would pop off again) and filled up the PS res with the Gunk PS leak and squeal fix stuff cause that was all I had to put in there. Do I need to flush it and put some ATF fluid in it then or should I go with an actual PS type fluid?

JoshSmith: I dont mean to take over your thread but since you guys are already talking about the PS fluid I thought I would ask a few ?'s

Yes.. you need to flush the fluid, per post #2 above, use AFT fluid.. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. The pump holds about a quart, but get 2 quarts for flushing.. remember, don't let the pump run low on fluid at anytime or it will suck air into the system..

Yep, Clints right, specs call for ATF in the PS pump. PS Fluid can damage the seals
