I need help ! I have a 2001 7.3 SD. I had 116,000 miles on the original E40D transmission. I recently replaced it with a Ford reman. E40D. The old trans was dropped out and the new trans bolted in. Bingo, all of my problems fixed except one... It seems as if the torque converter refuses to lock up except in overdrive. (exactly the same feeling as the old trans., this was not a new problem) If I am cruising and slam the pedal the tach. seems to stay pinned at "x" rpms yet the speedometer climbs and the engine sounds like there is little to no load on it. Only in OD does the speedo needle and tack move together. It's like the lockup is in slow motion. Also I remember the truck being much faster and chirping the tires while pulling out in traffic at one time. I tried and can't break the tires loose. Something isnt right. Also on a cool morning everything is perfect until the truck warms up, about 20 minutes later. On a hot morning no good from the second I start it. I also want to stress the old trans acted the same way so this issue is not related to the new trans, it didn't just happen.
My question: Since I have a completely new E40D tranny and it acts exactly like the old one, what else can cause this ? I have no idea what to check.
As a side note: I am getting decent city mileage 13.5 mpg, I have 305/75 tires, and the PCM is set to stock (no programmer), My bulldog power pup shows no codes, all my boots are tight and not leaking, and have a new EBP sensor and a clean tube.
Don't you mean a 4R100? E40Ds were in the older gen (pre-Super Duty). I believe the PCM controls lockup, shift points, etc. - maybe a re-flash at the stealership would help? Just a thought, but I'm sure the experts will chime in shortly with details.
Papadelogan is correct. The decision on when to lock and unlock is made in the PCM. IF the converter can lock in OD, there is nothing wrong in the trans. Your problem is that you don't like the way the PCM is programmed.
Yep, definately has to due with programming. Did you get a new TC with the reman tran?
Yes, I did. I really hate the delay in lockup, the problem is I don't remember having this complaint in the past. I really thought the new trans and all the Ford updates to it would improve that slip. The truck spends half of its rpm range free-wheeling... I really hope I find something because I am very dissapointed.

This statement is 100% correct. I was running the truck stock without using my programmer for about 6 months. Even when I used any of the 3 power settings I did not user the transmission tuning option because I had a bad tranny for a long time and was scared to do anything different to it. After reading this thread and now that I have a new tranny I used the Bully Dog programmers transmission tune and sure enough the torque converter locks up much earlier and tighter. I can't believe Ford setup the stock program like that. Thanks to everyone for the info about the PCM being the source of my lockup issue.
