Question Starter Woes

So every once in a while on a hot summer day here in Houston, my 2000 4.6 125,000 will start right up, but just one thing, the starter keeps on running. It only happens occasionally, every month or so. Sometimes it will stop in a few seconds and then othertimes I have to disconnect the battery. Even if I turn the engine off, it keeps running. Battery is only way to stop it. So, as I understand it, there are two solinoids that could possibly be the problem. One on the firewall and one on the starter. Any ideas on which one it might be or if it is something else. Thanks guys

I had this problem on my old 89 f-250, was the ignition starter switch, located at the base of the steering columm, the rod that connected it to the ignition switch had actually worn into the switch and was doing weird things. Was like a 20 buck part, don't know if yours is the same principle, but thought it was worth mentioning. If not that I would suspect the solenoid on the firewall, open to heat, direct battery connection always hot, I don't think the solenoid on the starter itself could energize without a signal from the firewall solenoid.

Spotty..

It's fairly common for the starter solenoid on the side of the starter to stick-esp in hot weather. It's about an $18 part.

So does that mean that the starter can get power even if the solinoid on the firewall is working properly like Spotty said, because what he said about the power seems to make logical sense. Thanks

It doesn't have to have power to keep the starter engaged if that solenoid sticks in the engaged position.

Good enough for me, I'll work on replacing that solinoid. Thanks
