Unhappy Does not shift...

Hello from Portland, Oregon...
Looking for some information -

I have a 75 F250 Camper Special - 2wd, 460 V8, automatic. When I shift the truck into "D" and start from a stopped position, it seems like the transmission is actually starting out in 3rd gear. When I press the accelerator to the floor, it does not shift down and gradually gains speed. If I move the shift lever into "1", and step on the gas, the truck does not move but the engine will rev and then quickly drop back to an idle...almost as if something is binding. It has done this 3-4 times over the past several months, each time it lasts for about a week and then while driving it "slips" in to the proper gear and functions properly for the next severa weeks.

Here is what I have tried so far:
-Checked the linkage - all is in tact and in good working condition
-Checked the transmission fluid
-Replaced the Transmission Modulator
-I had someone sit in the drivers seat and move the shift handle thru the gears while I was under the truck watching the arm on the transmission shift into each position.
-I removed the rod from the shift arm on the side of the transmission that extends to the the bottom of the steering column. The transmission shifts into each gear as it should when moving the shifting arm thru each position.
-Since my truck can be started in any gear, I chocked the wheels, moved the shift arm on the side of the tranny to the "1" position, crawled out from under the vehicle and started the truck. When I pressed the accelerator, the truck would not drive and the engine would rev; when I released the gas pedal, it would quickly return to an idle - again, as if something is binding.

I am guessing that the last "experiment" listed above would indicate that there is something inside the transmission that is not functioning properly and would require removing the tranny from the vehicle?

I would believe that you have lost the clutches in 1st and 2nd, but I don't know much about automatics. When it does engage the right gears, I think that enough particles have built up between the shells and clutch rings to let them lock.

Conversly, it could just be something a miss in the valve body. Either way it will take someone more knowledgable than me to dianois.

If the vehicle will also drive in Neutral, not move in Reverse and not be able to rev the engine in Park, it sounds as though the forward and direct clutch packs have seized up.

The only repair is removal.

Well, I thought I would post a quick up update...

My transmission was toast - since I am not very knowledgeable about the workings of an AT, I will not go into detail on the condition of the parts they pulled out...but I ended up having it COMPLETELY rebuilt

Tranny works - ooooooooh so nice now! The funny thing is I feel so much lighter...oh wait, that is because I emptied my pockets out to have it repaired.

Now...onto the PV dilema.

Thanks.
Chris
