I want to hear from the guys who have drove BOTH 7.3l and a cummis 05 or 06 5.9l or a 07 6.7l. Which one would you preffer to tow with? What were the pro's and con's of each one's towing? Which felt more powerfull while towing? And Lastly which one handled the weight better.(although I think i already no but just seing wat other people have to say) If you do reply plz state the specs on the 2 you drove. Dont get me wrong I'm am and always will be a die hard ford fan no matter what i drive. Just doing some reaserch for my dad.
Thanks

Not really a fair comparison since turbo diesels have gotten quite a bit more powerful since the days of the 7.3L. Both are reliable powerplants and good engines, but the towing capability and power points go to the newer inline 6 Cummins. But you'll pay a whole lot less to get a used 7.3L truck!
The 08's are a little more than he wants to spend but trust me he wants one. He doesnt want a 6.0 with them being a little problem prone when they first came out he is kinda hesitant about them. He is considering the dodges because cummins has proven itself over and over again and they are realy reliable, and he realy liked the 07 6.7 with I think it was a turbo brake not sure though and the 6sp auto with the selectable gears on the shifter. What I need to do is get him to test drive the 08 He would probably sell our house to buy it after he did.... lol
P.S. we have a 35ft fifth wheel we tow nearly everyweekend. It says in the book "Shipping weight 9940lbs" dont no if that is very acurate becuase it says it supposed to be 31 feet long but the tape measure said otherwise. and "Hitch" I take it means hitch weight is 1875lbs. It squats his poor 7.3 srw pretty bad it hits the overload springs on sertain bumps.

Because he currently has a 7.3l he tries to get a new vehicle every 4 or 5 years so it still has good resale
I would like some info on the 6.4 and 6.7 but I didnt figure anyone has owned both of them yet.?.?.
I take back what i said earlier he has drove a 6.4 the fire dpt got one. He said it didnt feel as powerful as his chipped 7.3 but with our camper behind it the 2 turbo's will change the story.

Even though I hate to say it.....the Cummins is definitely hands down the superior motor here. My brother has owned a 7.3L, a 6.0L, and now owns the Cummins. It is pretty much comparing apples to oranges if you're gonna compare it to the 7.3L powerstroke, I have one and LOVE it, tows everything I have just fine.....but if Ford ever offered the Cummins in our trucks, I think the days of the powerstroke would be numbered! I just can't ever get used to the styling of the Dodge, I'll stick with FORD
I think that you need to compare total packages, not just the engines.
Cummins makes an awesome engine, but you're saddled with a Dodge truck and transmission. If I had a requirement to pull a large fith wheel like that I would go with a new 6.4 (or even a 6.0) with the Torqueshift automatic. The 6.0 wasn't the best engine ever put in a truck, but I do think the reputation of the engine was tainted by a few teething problems.
The Dodge tranny is the weak link in the whole setup. Why not put a cummins in an F250 or hey get an F250 or 350, put a Cummins in there and an Allison tranny, the best of all the worlds! www.destroked.com
They have cool Cummins swap kits.
Cheers,
Shawn
Very interesting stuff on that destroked.com site! I just wonder if any mechanic would touch your truck with the ala cart parts, or if warranty is even an option? I've only got 155,000 miles on my stroker....so I'll probably never get the chance to mix-n-match engines to trucks, unless that lottery option comes through!

I agrea with redford, Only had ford in the past but bought a new dodge quad 2500 4x4 in march '06 just for the 5.9 loved the moter got 19mpg 21 on the road empty and pulled strong. But i new the tranny was weak so when it went would replaced with a/m. The rest of the truck was so so.
First snow in dec. old man slid across 4 lane hit me head on. Totaled my truck went back with '07 cc 250 4x4 6.0 this time. Truck to truck ford wins of course ford was an extra $10,000
PS. When towing above 10,000 # the ford does better, at 2' longer and alitter heaver helps.
Had a 99 7.3 250 that was Chiped up with BullyDog, exhaust, AFI intake, ect.. Would put truck thing up agianst anything. Regurally pulled +8000 lbs 8 - 12 hours once a month one way and then back again. The Cummings is strong, but also has had trouble lately. Plus the truck wrapped around it sucks. Look at a few that have been used, many little things break and don't wear properly. Search around and you will find that the Cummings has had similar troubles making reliable engines that meet the new fuel standards. Now have a 06 6.0 still stock, pulling the same trips, stock the 6.0 is no where near what the 7.3 was after I had put a bunch of goodies into it, but still pulls strong and has been trouble free for 15,000.... BTW the 7.3 only got tradded in on the 6.0 because my family out grew the extended cab attached to the 7.3. 7.3 had +160,000 miles and never spent a day in the shop.
The Destroked guy makes a great product. He has been doing it for awhile now and it is a very well made product. The really nice thing about the Cummins is you have room to work on it. You won't have to take the cab off to get to it. Also you can easily put a twin turbo system and any number of other things on it, relatively easy.
I would love to have a Cummins/Allison equiped F250! Pull anything anywhere and look cool doing it!
Cheers
