my 84 f150 has the original fuel tank. on more than one occasion my carb has flooded due to trash reaching the carb. i've replaced filters and they only give me a two month break between flooding carbs. my tank also is only a 16 gal and i'd like a little more range.
i've been looking at auxiliary tank/toolbox box combo's with a 50 gal capacity.
what i want to do is remove the factory tank completely and use only the auxiliary tank. but the aux. tanks i've seen don't seem to be set up for this purpose unless i'm missing something.
if i'm wrong than please correct me; if i'm right than maybe knows how i may go about setting up a sending unit in these aux tanks.
The problem is the feed system. I think that the aux tank is set up for gravity feed and the stocker is set up with the feed, return, and electrical for the truck. I'm not sure it will work.
My truck is carb'ed and i'm pretty sure there is no return line. i'm also pretty sure the only electrical part of the fuel tank is the sending unit for the fuel gauge and the aux tank unit that i've been considering has a built in fuel gauge. it might be a little difficult to check my fuel level when driving but it'll be less of a headache than trying to adapt a ford sending unit into the aux. tank.
thanks for the input though i posted this a while back and youre the first to reply
10-4 hi...Are you talking about a bed mount aux tank? They are great on construction jobs, but require a different insurance rider. Many public parking areas do not allow these,,and that was before 911... there are custom gas tank builders,,,and aftermarket plastic tanks with lg capacity,,,,good luck
yeah the ones i've been looking at are mounted in the bed, but they aren't the type you're probably think of. the type that i want isn't the type used to refuel other vehicles. the kind i want are just an extra fuel tank thet usually feeds the main stock fuel tank. I've seen these as just an aux. fuel tank and as a toolbox with the aux. fuel tank underneath it. i prefer the latter.
Iron, I don't know where you hail from but down here in Miami, trucks with the type of Aux. fuel tank i think you're talking about run around and park where ever they please (but now that i think about it, everyone down here does that).
since i started this post i've realized that (someone correct me if i'm wrong) since my truck is carbed and has a mechancial fuel pump i don't need to wire up a sending unit. mech. fuel pumps use vacuum created by the pump to pull fuel from the tank. so i only need to run a fuel line into the aux. fuel tank.
the only purpose the sending unit serves in this case is to read the fuel level and send a signal that the fuel gauge can display. and the tanks i've seen have a fuel gauge built into the side of the tank/toolbox. it might be a little annoying that i can't check my fuel level while driving. oh well, i think its worth it to more than double my trucks range.
This should be easier to setup than i originally thought.
opinions welcome.
Guy
