trailer charge power

I have an 06 screw and have installed the factory relay and a trailer brake but I don't have any 12v power to charge my camper battery when it is plugged into the truck. I have brake, signal and tail lights. The fuse is good. any ideas?

great question. I have a trailer that needs a 12v source for the interior lights. The trailer is wired to get this through the 7 way but Ford does not wire the plug like the other manufactures.

I have a 05 Scab. In order to get 12V power to the trailer battery you have to install the missing relay in the fuse panel, passenger side kick panel. I don't recall which one it was, but the owners manual has a layout showing "trailer charge" relay. It was about $15.00 from the dealer.

I too have the same issue. I put the relay in and it does get power., but the truck has to be on. Is there a way to get the power to be on in the trailer with the truck off. I have lights inside my trailer and i do a lot of night work but i dont want to waste gas and have my truck on just for the lights in the trailer to work. Is there a way to do that?

black04lariat,
The trailer charge relay is meant to keep the truck battery from becomming discharged while connected to a trailer. I suppose you could run a (fused) hot wire to the trailer charge wire under the dash, and along with a switch, power lights in the trailer.

Another option would be to mount a Marine Deep Cycle battery and battery box on the tongue of your trailer. This way you would not run down the truck battery and it would recharge while the truck is running and connected to the trailer. Of course the trailer would have to have the 7 pin connector installed with the charge wire running to the new trailer battery.

Here is a link for the wiring diagram for the 7 pin connector.

As gottarun says add the battery to your trailer. We boondock for week at a time and when the lights start to be dim just hook up the truck and let it run for several minutes. We usually let it run while fixing dinner and shut it off when ready to eat. The only time's we've had to repeat it during a trip was when we were also running the fans.
Don't forget to unplug the connector becuase it does quite a bit of damage to the cables when you try to drive away with it still connected. Please don't ask how I know.
