I have a 3 speed C6 in my F150 now but I want to change it to a tranny with an overdrive. I may not need to, but it seems to me that if I had overdrive I could cruise at a lower RPM and save some gas. Is there a transmission that fits? And is it even practicle? What about the gear indicator on the instrument panel? Is there a card to replace what I have? All these questions, and many more come to mind when I think big thoughts. Maybe you can help me out.
Yes to everything. I just replaced my C6 with a 5spd stick. You can use any 4spd automatic that was previously behind a 300/302/351W. Some are electronic though, so that will need to be taken into consideration. I think a 4spd auto was available in 85-86 F-150's, so you could find the correct gear indicator to replace your current one.
Do a search and see what mileage people are getting that have OD trannies. Maybe some of them will chime in on this post. Dare I say you might get 3 more miles per gallon?
So if you drive 10,000 miles per year, you get 15 miles per gallon now, and you are paying 3 dollars per gallon, 10,000 divided by 15 =666 gallons used per year, times 3 dollars per gallon equals $1999.99 cost for a year of fuel.
10,000 miles per year at 18 miles per gallon = 555 gallons used per year, times 3 dollars per gallon equals $1666.66 cost for a year of fuel.
So 1999.99 minus 1666.66 = $333 dollars per year fuel savings.
If it costs you $1000.00 to do the tranny swap, then it will take roughly 3 years to break even.
