Need some help. Not really mechanically inclined so bear with me. I was installing a block htr cord and while doing so noticed oil on the bottom of the head gasket bolts....? If that is the head gasket...The oil is only present on the passenger side. Truck runs fine, oil level is fine, never even noticed oil on my driveway...just on the bolts-head gaskets...if I am naming the correct part. Anybody willing to educate me on head gasket identification...thankx
Forget what ever it was that you saw. When you see black spots on the driveway then its a problem. Till then, I recommend drinking vast quantities of mind erasers to forget you ever saw it. Trust me you will thank me later.

Well if you were looking at the bottom of the head gasket bolts, you would have to be looking through a hole in the engine block below the heads and an oil leak would be the least of your problems. Now that being said, there are several things that can leak oil on a 6.0, CAC tubes, ICP sensor, Cam or Crank postion sensor, Front or rear cover, turbo oil line, rear main seal. The only way to determine were the leak is coming from is to take your truck to the dealer and they will put dye in the oil, then you drive it for awhile and when you take it back to the dealer they use a black light and trace the source of the leak and fix it.
Almost all oil leaks on the 6.0 eventually end up running onto the oil pan/bell housing.
What is the year, model, mileage and modifications of your truck?
2005 6L F250 CC LWB. 16K...have only run a superchips on economy for the last 10K. Rarely tow, when I do, its only 1-2 ATVs. Am I just opening up a can of worms here? More problems to come??
I am driving 3K miles from Alaska to Colorado in 3 wks. Should I ditch this thing? Would be easy to sell up here with all the campers. Opinions?
Seriously, wipe the oil off, go on vacation and forget about it. If it starts leaving spots or is still bugging you after your trip then take it to a reputable dealership and they will fix it. If you are not losing any oil measureable by the dipstick you don't have a serious problem. Maybe an inconvience but not a operational problem.
To tell you just how minor it could be, it could be nothing more than a loose clamp or a weeping boot on the cac tube. (15 minute fix with right tools and cooled down)

Ditch it? Your kidding me right? It is a minor oil leak for god sakes, when you get back from your trip take into the dealer and let them put dye in it. They will find it and fix it. Since it is on the passenger side only it could be the CAC tube fitting is weeping, but my money is on the ICP sensor, mounted toward the front of the enginge through the valve cover. It is more than likely the $0.10 o-ring on the sensor.
Go on your vacation and enjoy your trip, your motor will be fine. Only oil leak that would hurt the motor is one pumping the oil out on the ground in a stream.
It is mechanical, things break, when you get home take it to the dealer and let them do there job it is under warranty for 5/100K.
Jdogg, DON'T ditch the truck!! Mine has had oil on the bellhousing since the first oil change. It still has oil on the bellhousing and I finally took it in this morning....35k miles later. And guess what? Not one single problem with the truck in those 35k miles!! Just have your dealership put the dye in the oil, drive a few hundred miles, and let them diagnose the problem (I'm sure it will be minor).
The only reason I took my truck in is because this week I will pass the 3/36k warranty and I wanted to simply know where the leak was (not to mention that they gave me a free car wash for coming in).
Now a real oil leak was the 7.3L that was next to mine to check in to the service center.....he dripped at least 1 quart of oil in 3 minutes while he unloaded the things out of his truck!!
Either get the dye put in the oil (which is what I finally did) or do as Ryan said and forget about it (which is what I did for the last 35k miles)....Just DON'T ditch the truck for a minor issue.
Ditch it was thrown out there b/c of all the horror stories I have read about the 6L. I actually installed the htr cord in Jan...remember seeing the same oil residue. Didn't think much of it. I got under it today just to give it a look and still there\somewhat wet. Nothing major just covering 2 of the 4 head gasket bolts and surrounding bases. Truck runs great. I wiped it off today, check the oil (was full) and will head out in a few weeks. When I arrive in Colorado and have them give it a peek. Matter of fact, I am gonna do a road trip this weekend up to the Denali Hwy to chase grizzly bears...will put 3-400 miles on it and check it again to see if the oil residue has built up again.
Do you recommend me setting it back to "stock" or still safe on economy on my superchips tuner?
Jdogg, don't give too much thought to the horror stories of the 6L as there are 100's of thousands of us who are very pleased with our trucks. As for the tuner, I've been running an Economy tune this last 4k miles and I noticed no more or less oil accumulation on my bellhousing. So I think that it's a personal preference, but someone may have some more insight on that. If you're doing that much driving, just take it in to your dealership, mention the leaking oil, and ask for the dye. They'll want you to drive it for 200+ miles and then bring it back in to see where it's seeping out. If your truck is running great, then that is the most important part and remember that everytime you hear a horror story.
I hope someone can chime in on the tuner issue.
Good luck chasing grizzlies this weekend! Just don't hit one doing 95mph as I did a few years ago (black bear, not a grizzly)! That can really mess your weekend and truck up!
You can run your tuner, it is not contributing to the oil leak, you said it your self, very little oil accumulation in almost 6 months time. The head gaskets are not leaking oil. If the headgaskets leak you have coolant puking issues among others. Your oil leak is minor and either the sensor or the CAC tubes weeping at the joints, which is normal for the CAC tubes to do.
Go on vacation and drive it, and understand the majority of posters on FTE only come to complain about a problem, very few people show up and post when everything is running fine. The majority of 6.0 owners are never on this site and most trucks run just fine.
I love the truck...runs like a monster. My buddies ride with me on long fishing trips to the Kenai and love it. It pounds up the long mtn pass and wants more. Thanks for the reassurance fellas. I do want to put a leveling kit on it.
