idling low

my 5.8l 86 f150 is idling very low when i start it, almost like it's going to quit. the choke doesn't seem to be working (you put the chooke on by pumping the gas 3 times before starting right?) and then the engine squeals while driving it at low speeds.
any help would be great

The choke i believe is electronically operated, so i dont see how pumping the accelerator would do anything. Maybe you have a bad connection to the choke. If you take the lid off the carb and start it, can you see the chock operate?

There is a large plate that swivels to open and close the opening to the carb. It should shut the hole when cold, and slowly open up as the truck warms up.

Yeah, or it may not catch at all.

When checking the choke plate with the engine cold, make sure you hit the gas pedal at least once. This releases the throttle linkage and frees up the choke mechansim so it can shut. Pumping the gas two more times just puts more fuel into the engine, which may or may not be required, depending on what it takes to start your engine(all engines seem to have different personalities).

If the choke is not shut with the engine cold, loosen the bolts on the large round black piece on the passenger side of the carb, and turn it till the choke plate shuts.
