Hey guys,
What is needed to put a C6 from a torino into a 68 f-100 with a 240 and a warner 4 speed? Rear end is a 3.70.
Flywheel, starter, small radiator for tranny, column. What about the linkage? Or the torque converter? Is anything else needed?
Thanks.
Keep the driveshaft from the torino you will need the slipyoke for the c6, you have to find a driveshaft the proper length for your truck since the c6 is longer. You may want to get the third member out of the torino because 370 will be to low geared for automatic, unless you are pulling heavy loads.I have used one linkage from 3 on the tree before, or you can get a universal one from jegs, or salvageyard.
You may be able to use the tourque converter but not 100 percent sure.
Cross member should work, i think you got it.
Be sure to get flexplate for the 240.
Unfortunately the torino is not available for parts, I'll have to go elsewhere. Would it be easier to find a whole new rear end or change the third member as you said? Also, what other vehicles used that size of driveshaft?
You would be best off finding a truck 1967-1972 with auto and get the thirdmember (pumpkin some call it) and driveshaft out of it, be sure to get the axles too or at least count the splines to make sure yours will fit. This is a 9 inch rear? right. Remember if you go looking for a rear that there are different widths so be sure to check it.
Why do you want to change the trans you have one of the best?
Also if the vehicle has been driven regular i may chance putting the auto in, but if it has been sitting for a while it may be a risk.
Although the engine runs good, and has regularly been driven, the tranny doesnt shift very well and has been driven hard. It needs replacing. Secondly, it will be used primarily as a street only vehicle for work and also I have a bum knee thats starting to give some problems. Plus I got a good deal on the tranny but didnt realize the # of parts involved. Now, if I could only find that dream truck with all the parts I need to get this going...........thanks for all your knowlege. It is greatly appreciated.
P S If anyone from the S F bay area has a line on these parts, please let me know. alvjaa@hotmail.com
alv, With the 240 engine I don't think I would be changing away from the 3.70 rear too fast. Install the tranny and see if you feel that you can use less power.
The car tranny selector arm hangs below the pan lip, kinda like this /
one from a truck is horizontal _ with the lip
I have one from a car in my truck that hangs down and causes the selection to be bound up. I can't pull mine into L and then shift it out after moving. I have a replacement that I hope to install soon. You would be much happier installing it correctly before you start. IMHO
The 9 inch rear axles are wider beginning in 1973, so only the center section will fit into a pre 1973 F100. Some 1968/72 rear axles have 31 splines, prior to 1968, all were 28 splines. The car rear axles WILL not work in a truck. The bolt pattern is different. 4.50 for cars, 5.50 for trucks.
well first thing you hafta ask, in my opinion is, will the trans bolt up? you say you got it out of torino, i'm assuming it was a smalll block car, in which it wiill bolt up, but i'm gonna let ya know, if power is anything of any kind of issue here, such as pullin a flat bottom boat or maybe a 4-wheeler, well, the c-6 is gonna need some gears, like 4:11, reason i say that is because your ole warner stick doesnt take that much power to turn, somewhere around 20-30hp , the c-6 on teh other hand takes about 75hp to turn, you will notice a huge difference when the swap is complete, i did myself when i swapped a brand new c-6 into my 66 a few year ago, damn thing wouldnt hardly get out of its own way, and it had 3:50 gears in it, so you kiinda gotta weigh your options here
Wow, that changes everything. I appreciate all the advice and knowlege from all of you. So I guess the easiest way to go to make this an automatic is find a donor truck, right guys? Since the variations seem endless once you start mixing and matching.
I'm just looking for the easiest and least expensive way, but parts are harder to come by everyday.
