Smile Between a hinge and a hard place

Well the hinges were shot on drivers side of my 94 . They had pins replaced allready but still were shot. And the hinges on my parts truck only 1 year old right from Ford. SO here goes

I built couple pieces of scaffold and suspended door of parts truck unbolted door and hund so not to damage window wires . Removed hinges .

Pull th 94 in garage suspended door from cieling and did same . I took all measurements and out lined them first. First I replaced top reinstalled door (temp)I was close but had to move 3/16.. Did bottom to marks reinstalled door was way off needed to go back . And on and on . Well hour latter it fits like new. A little stiff as the old truck has set for to years.

Now I go to put door on parts truck I eyeball the hinges (as lond as it closed I didn't care) Bolt them up threw on door . And it was perfect I meen it fit nicer the the 94 first off. But that is way it allways works .

The one nobody will see turns out nicest.

lostin90s,

Congrats on your successful approach. I was wondering how to begin to do this. I too have a '94. Mine's a Flare Side 4x4 w/5 spd. And, yes my driver's door has a good 1/4" play up/down.

Thanks for posting your approach and good end result...'specially to your parts truck...lol!

Regards,

Jim

Is it common for the hinges on these older fords to need to be replaced? Mine are crappy but i've lived with it and i'm also too afraid to undertake replacing them.

I just did mine on an 87. I had about an inch of play or more at the end of the door. I ordered two pin and bushing kits(1 pin, 2 bushings per) from advanced auto at the cost of about $4.00 a piece, unbolted the door from the hinge, set it to the side, cut the old pins, tapped out the old pins and bushing's, tapped in the new bushings, slid in the new pins, put the c-clips on and bolted the door back up. I haven't had much time to try and align it yet but the longest part of the whole process was cutting the old pins out, but that was kinda my fault, with a better blade it could have cut alot easier.

Dremel rotary tool....

I did both of mine...And it took longer to cut them off than to rehang the door...But I didn't take the hinges off...I tied the top of the door (window down) to my deer rack (A-Frame)..Made it nice and tight..And went to cutting on the pin....Made it fairly easy, just tedious..Slid the old pin out (banged it out) then put the new one in...

Yes they go bad after 10 + years

I had the OEM hinges I had just put on old truck so used them .

To replace hinges

There is a tool /wrench made to do this so you can loosen/tighten hinge bolt easy but I don't have one. You could take a long box end wrench and heat and bend to get to bottom bolts make life little easier.( In the rust belt we replace fenders so I just fix hinges then )

Hang door I use tie down strap around top window opening and hange from Garage door track or what ever.

Outline door to hing with tape or marker (will help put back to gether)

Put tape one edge door and fender edge (keep from chipping paint)

Unbolt door bottom then top (will help keep away from body)
Door will come away about 6 " if you have power options or take door panel off and unplug stuff for more room .

Mark Hinges on door jamb and mark hinges for how far pasted the jamb into opening they stick by.

Just do one hinge at time (will help line back up )

I used 3/8" drive 13MM to break loose then 1/4 "drive to take out (more room )

Swap 1 hinge ,line up best can and reinstall door Temp.(Just to check alinement carefull not to chip paint when close door . Once happy with gap and up and down close (There is adjustment in door mount bolts)

Do the bottom same way , reinstall door .

If you are lucky the line between fender will be good first time and you will need to just adjust in and out at door to hinge mounts. Fender to door should be about flush in and out. If not you will have to remove door and adjust hinges a little to acheve spacing you want.

If you want to try just pins (If old worn realy bad this may not fix complete problem .) But for price try it .

Support door if you remove and let hang like above you can get to pins easier

Cut pin with cut off tool (hacksaw blade will take forever)

Drive out pin ends (will take while )

Put new bushings and pins in

repete for other hinge

let door loose and slowly try closeing door ( you may have to adjust door because of new pins. )

You may have to adjust latch (some one may have moved it to help the door close with bad pins. )

Its not bad to do both ways . Just time consuming . Took me 2 1/2 hrs to remove parts ,paint, Take other truck apart and reinstall both sets.

GOOD LUCK LOST
