*pokes head in*
I had been posting back in November or December about getting a truck soon...well, I ended up spending more money on my car and didn't actually save up anything

But, my former winter beater tempo is just about dead (terminal cancer of the floorpans, it looks like) and it's gotta be replaced.
So this time, for real...I'm done spending money on my Thunderbird and I'm actually gonna try to save up some cash. I just have this lust for a diesel that won't go away (and it doesn't help that my brother just got a cummins...dammit!), so I gotta get my fix somehow

Sorry about your car. Sometimes you just have to let go.
Good luck on finding diesel. Hope you find what you want.
I found my 1984 E350 6.9L at a Can acadamy auction. Very good price. Have driven for two years now. Have less than $1,000 in it now including two bats. two head lights, waterpump and master cylinder. Runs very good though. Also misc. parts.
If you need a car also. You might look at a W123 Mercedes. You can find them for under $2,000. I have had mine for over three years. Paid $1,350 for it. That may have been too much. It was my first diesel and I didn't know, but I have driven it out of if. These little cars are almost indestructable if they are non turbocharged, and my 300TD (stationwagon) gets around 28 to 29 MPG on the highway.
I really like driving my van though, but it does only get 16 or so hwy MPG. Geared 3.54 or so with C-6.
Any way: Good luck
I wish there were V6 or I-4 diesel pickups available in this country, I'd just get one of them, but oh well.
Not sure about the diesel mercedes idea...I wouldn't mind a diesel car, but I doubt a benzo would go very well in the winter (I have a feeling I'm gonna NEED 4WD this winter due to the area I moved to)
Know what you mean about a truck. I sure would wan't one in the snow.
Fords little truck had an I-4 diesel in the 70s or early 80s I have heard. I never saw one though. It was when the little truck was made by Mazda I think. I don't know what size it was but it was around 2.0 or 2.2L.
The new Ranger is offered in Germany with a turbo diesel today. They are in regular cab, super cab, and four door. You might look at WWW.ford.de web site and drool. I know I do.
Mercedes in the series after my W123 car offered a 4 wheel drive in the station wagon.
This was the W124 series. It was called "4-matic" I believe. The W124 was basicly the same car as the W123 with a differene front clip. Also the motor was a 3 liter 6cyl diesel as opposed to the 5cyl 3 liter in the W123. I have heard the 6cyl motor was not as tough as the 5cyl. This may be because they are turbocharged though.
I don't know if this is true or not.
Don't know where you would ever find one of those old small diesels in the Ford or Mazda pickups. You might keep an eye on E-Bay. Think I saw one in there a year or two ago.
Good luck.
The diesel ranger that was offered around here was from 1984-1987. 83-84 had a N/A 2.2L diesel that gave a dismal 59hp. 85-87s had a mitsubish 2.3L turbo that gives up 86hp. Soposedly they did not sell enough to be worth building more of them.
I rebuilt and transplanted a 2.3L into a 1988 ranger, and its a great engine, with about the same torque as the 2.9EFI it replaced, but gets better mpg and sounds waaay better
.Parts are harder to find, but I was able to find everything I need so far.
I look at those diesel rangers and just stare sometimes. Then I say "God it's not right".
Oh, well. Maybe that's what Heaven is all about. ""A turbo diesel Ranger"

Diesel selection in this part of the world simply SUCKS! I sometimes drool over other ford websites in austrailia, europe and more recently argentina. There, you can get a superduty (they call it the f100) truck with a cummins 4cyl turbo diesel that delivers a little over 200hp, and over 25mpg (so I've heard).
Thats right, a cummins in a ford!
They may not have the same peak Hp of similar sized gasser, but all that torque give you the impression that there are more horses than listed. For only 86Hp, the converted ranger moves along just fine.

not sure how this matches our numbers.
2,5L turbo diesel
143PS horses
330NM torque
Sure like that little truck with that motor. Guess my feds would have a fit if someone tried to bring one in though.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I think 143 is the horse power rating
330nm works out to about 250 flbs of torque
Hehe...they also have a 3.0L diesel that puts out even more....
Don't like the over 30.000 Euro price tag though. That really racks the price up when you convert that to US dollars. That is for the 4door Ranger though.
I think I like my old E350 better now but it is nice to dream.
Don't think my Social Screwty will stretch that far. HarHar
I was suprised how much luxury was put into a 25 year old car, and they also came with an overdrive tranny in a time when 3 speed slushboxes reigned supreme here in the "new world", some even had 5 speeds.
No prolblem. You can get a brand new 4door Ranger from Ford Germany with diesel for right at 32,000 Euros. HeHe
And you can't hardly kill one of those either.
If you want power get a turbo. The 240TD was tougher but no power. My 300L N/A will run 85 MPH all day long. Just takes half day to get up to 85.
ghunt said wanted 4wheel drive though and they didn't put it into the 300TD until 1986 modle year
