ABS light

A friend just bought a used '98 Expy with 65k miles. On the second day, the abs light came on. Is there an easy way to know what's wrong? Or is this one of those "dealer" problems?

Is this just a code like the CEL? I'm wondering if the dealer he bought from had just reset the light so it would go off until he got the truck home...

I should have searched before I posted my question. It seems the most common cause is the speed sensor mounted on the rear diff - is that right? What else could it be?

Mine came on and it was the speed sensor. It was 26 bucks from the dealer and took maybe 5 minutes to switch out. Problem solved.

the rear sensor is sort of on top of the differential. It is REALLY easy to replace. Even if it isn't the problem it's worth the bet, just for the chance of avoiding a couple of hundred bucks to the dealer in diagnostics and labor costs.

Before possibly wasting 25 bucks, pull the flippin sensor and check it with an ohmmeter. Dead ones are always open. Good ones are around 1.2K.

My ABS light is on too. Where's the sensor?

If anyone can tell me where the sensor is located, or even what it looks like, I'd appreciate it! 2001 Gator

Thanks

If you follow your driveline to where it attaches; then follow on top of the pumpkin you should find a plug about half way between the "pinion" (end of the driveline) and the back of the housing. It should be fairly obvious, with a plug and two wires. You may not be able to see it, but if you run your hands on the top of the housing you should be able to find it.

Good Luck

I'm not sure if you're the same Steve that answered my other post... but for the sake of throughness.. .i guess.. I'll add the conculsion of this problem here. The other Steve... (assuming you're not the same one) checked the service manual for the 03+ expy/nav and found that they use 2 abs sensors. One on each wheel. No longer are they on the pumpkin. ...

Thanks guys for all your help and quick response... This is why I love coming here.
