If you have a socket the right size and can turn the motor by hand, you can get #1 to TDC, and install the dizzy from there... It sucks, because it's pretty easy to get a tooth or two off, but it's a start...

If you loosen the belts, it makes turning the motor easier, but it's not a huge deal.
The balancer behind your crankshaft pulley has timing marks in it. I put a thick white line of white out on the 0 mark. The point is to get the 0 mark to line up with the little metal point above (and a little off to the passenger side). That's TDC.
Another way is to remove the spark plug from the #1 cylinder, and put a small wooden dowel in the hole, sitting on the piston. While you turn the motor, the dowel will move up (it's good to keep an eye on the pulley mark too) and right when the dowel hits the top, and is about to back down, that's TDC.
When you get to this point, install your dizzy with the rotor pointing to where the #1 plug wire is. Sometimes it can be annoying to get it in and lined up right, but if you're patient, you'll get it. Also, it's good to grease the dizzy gear and shaft really well when installing, and put some anti-seize where it contacts the block.
After all this, you should find someone with a timing light to get it right where it's supposed to be.

Hope this helps.

you might as well set the rotor pointing to #6 because you have an equal chance of being 180* off using that method. you may have found TDC but you have no way of knowing whether you're on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke unless you put your finger in the plug hole while you turn the engine and wait for the compression to blow your finger out the hole. now you know you're on the right stroke, when the timing marks line up, drop the dizzy in. you need to anticipate the rotation of the gear to get it to end up where you want it to be, at about 12:30 / 1:00. hopefully your wires are in the factory positions or you'll need to reset them too.
