Got a problem with my 300 not wanting to idle when the outside air temp gets above 80'. {It does just fine in the rain or when it is cool/cold out.}
What I have is a '82 F-100 with a 300 1bbl stock except for an re-manufactured 1bbl, elec fuel pump and a aftermarket air cleaner.
If I do stop light/in town running, it will surge and almost die 3 or 4 times then cut off. If I just barely touch the throttle, it will run but I have to have the idle up around 1000 rpm. Any lower and it will just surge from 400 to 900. It also "shuts down" when I let off of the throttle while driving, but picks right up when the throttle is pushed.
When I shut the motor off, go in somewhere for less than 30 mins, it starts right up, but refuses to idle. After driving at speed for 10 to 20 mins, it will idle if I have to stop, but will soon start all over again.
The motor also runs "cold", with the temp hardly getting above 180'.
I have replaced the carb 3 or 4 times, and each carb does this when the warmer days arrive.
I am soon to go through emissions testing here in Delaware, and the idle of anything above 900 rpm will fail. Any CHEAP ideas on the problem?
it might be a vacume leak? I had the same problem on my truck and it turned out the carb had a crack in the base and was causing it to stall in the exact way you described.
I found with mine when it was first started (cold) it would idle fine but when it warmed up the carb gasket would soften up and create an air leak, But after about 20 min of driving it would be ok again. I think the expanding metal closed the gap. This was all in warm weather like you mentioned i never really drove it when it was cold so im not sure if this is your problem
